There was actually a ford recall bulletin about flashing OD then hard shifts...had to do with the torque converter (I think) I read this somewhere..wish I could find the link for you..when I had the problem the local Ford dealer didn't even consider checking anything, just basically shrugged their shoulders, and said huh..why I eventually didn't have them do the work..also I learned all this AFTER plunking down a hunk of change on a new tranny and torque converter...course now I have a really nice tranny and torque converter..overbuilt for my needs probably...but anyways I digress...

First recommendation is to replace torque converter, if problem persisted it was to replace tranny and torque converter...

^the above is off the top of my head..and I may or may not have already imbibed an adult beverage or seven recently...

I will look through my links to see if I can find the actual recall list...

There are others on here way more helpful than I ....(its a good thing to)

Ok maybe not a recall...rethinking it was a service bulletin..my bad..

try here F-250-350 Series Technical Service Bulletins - 1994-1997 Power Stroke FAQ

or here ...look for e40d

Technical Service Bulletins

Or it could be bad memory/lack of sleep/alcohol....but I am trying to be helpful

Welcome to Fte !

Flashing OD means you have a code. Get it to a dealer or good trans shop and get the code pulled. With out the code you are pizzing the wind.

If you're considering replacing parts without checking codes you must have money to burn. There are not many ways to burn through a lot of money faster than replacing parts without even knowing what's wrong.

Get the code pulled.that will tell you what route to go. That is the only way to proceed.period.

You erased the codes when you unhooked the battery. You'll have to wait for it to act up again before you scan it.

Disconnecting the batteries clears the codes. The codes that were there are 100% gone. The same codes will eventually reset if you haven't fixed the problem.
