2005 F350 good?
Hey guys I'm new to this site and it seems like you guys know your stuff. I am currently looking at buying a 2005 F350 6.0 power stroke. It needs an FICM that I know of as was said in the post for it. He wants $5000 for it and has 185k on it. Is this a good buy or should I stay away and not waste my time? How much is it to bulletproof it and what should be done? Thanks.

If you are seriously in the market for a 6.0, drop the money on a Scangauge II so you can at least look at the "vitals" of the engine...IPR pressure, FICM volts, oil and water temp at minimum.
To "bulletproof" a 6.0 is on average $5000. It includes new head gaskets (FORD ONLY), checking the heads, machining if necessary may be extra, APR head studs, oil cooler, upgraded EGR cooler or delete, coolant filter setup, all engine updates (blue spring, turbo feed and drain tube, oil standpipes and dummy plugs) and labor to install it all.
6.0s are a different ballgame with a steep learning curve. Throwing parts at these trucks gets expensive and still may not fix the issue. I love my 6.0. now but when I first started working on these things I cursed them up and down. Also keep in mind if you are new to diesels, they require more maintenance. An oil change is 4+ gallons of oil plus a $30 oil filter and the fuel filters are about $55.
Without knowing anything specific about the truck you have in mind such as trim level, cab style, dual or single rear wheel, 2 or 4WD, condition, maintenance history, rust issues, tire condition, etc, it would be impossible to give you an answer as to value.
All that being said a 2005 6.0 in GOOD condition mechanically and cosmetically should easily be worth $5000. It could also cost an additional $5000 to make it run properly if you don't do your homework first.

The truck doesn't take 4+ gallons of oil.... Only 3.5 gallons.
Fuel filters are not $55, you can pick them up for $35.
Oil filters are not $30 either. You can pick them up for $14.

Forget the scangauge. Get an OBDII adapter and use your smart phone. Much cheaper and far more capable.

Advance auto prices the fuel filters at $55.99 and the oil filter as $23.99. They are a mile up the road and carry them in stock.
I haven't been to a Walmart in years and I'm not starting now.
I suppose I could find them cheaper somewhere if I had the time to search all day for the absolute lowest price.
Care to post some links or just wanna stir the ****?

I buy gallon jugs. You have to buy 4. You can go in and buy 15 or 16 quart bottles if you want but I don't have the time or patience for that.

I also buy gallon jugs. It takes 3.5 which is less than 4, let alone 4+ that you claim.

That will get you 30% or $50 whichever. Keep the cart to $150 or less to receive the maximum savings and hit it several times if you need a bunch of stuff! Saved me $200 on A/C parts alone, I don't think it works on oil.

Back to your question!
Look at this "thinking of buying a 6.0l" thread in the tech folder
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...used-6-0l.html
Additionally if that is all that is wrong with it, it a hell of a deal!
Have your friend bring his scanning equipment (assuming he a mech) and if possible, see if he can "borrow" FICM from one being worked on so you can run the truck and scan for the rest of the stuff.
