butt weld versus lap weld

No offense, but it also sounds like he is set in his ways and is only willing to do it his (easiest) way: flange the seam and lap weld it, cover the shrinkage with filler. I think you are either going to have to accept his way or find someone else (or take my next workshop and do it yourself, even less expensive!)

I think you are right.

Thanks for the offer but NC is a long way for a class.

Have seen adhesive test through salt, heat and cold. Test metal would tear before bond would break.
