Just moved to GR looking for a shop

Moved to Grand Rapids from Indiana recently. We love it here!

I have a 83 F250 6.9IDI RWD. Looking for a reliable honest shop that can do my U joints on the driveshaft. I do all my own engine work but don't have tools for shafts etc. Can anyone point me in a good direction? Thanks

What party of town did you move to?

There are a couple driveline shops on the west side of town. D&R driveline in Jenison does good work.

Welcome to the area and to the chapter, feel free to join in the BS thread we have. Great group of guys in this chapter, the west side guys try to get together randomly for beers too.

welcome to the 'hood. SE side here. moved here a few years back from a couple hours north and as far as i'm concerned i'm home now.

is it just the driveshaft ujoints? those are usually pretty straightforward with basic hand tools and a good vice in my experience.

Not sure actually. No free play in the shaft. I raised the rear and ran it in gear and heard nothing. Lowered it and rocked it back and forth........nothing.

When I drive it I get a squeaking when I take up the drive that goes away within seconds. When driving, if I come off the pedal and let it slow down then give it throttle I can hear a clunk. Doesn't happen all the time.

Look around where the joints are and see if you see any rust. The other cause of that sensation would be a bound u joint. would have to remove the shaft and try to see how freely the joints move around.

Well since the truck is 30 years old there's lots of rust. Its possible they may be the original joints since it was pretty low mileage when I got it. It had only been used a couple of times a year to haul a horse trailer back and forth to the state fair grounds.

Very cool!

As Brandon stated, not really that big of deal to swap out u joints with basic tools.

We could always look at it sometime at the next GTG...

Welcome.

X2 for D&R if you need to actually take it in. They do great work. Had my driveshafts lengthened and shortened by them.

Get ahold of any of us and we could give you a hand. Quite a few of us on the southside of GR.
