1978 F-150 with blown engine - to buy or not to buy?

Hey guys. Looks like my plans to get that riveted truck (check thread link in my signature block) back on the road won't pan out - body is too bad on it. What do you think of this one:

Ford F-150 | used cars & trucks | Ottawa | Kijiji

I talked to the seller. It has a 302 with a knock that will need to be rebuilt. No windshield. No mirrors. C6. New brakes and brake lines. Needs floor pans. Thoughts?

Well there are pieces of sheetmetal riveted on every body panel, and other holes that need to be covered. It needs a complete body swap. I actually have a body I could put on it, but it needs work as well (floor pans, cab mounts, and more). The real problem is that both trucks are hundreds of miles away. It's a long story. This truck is nearby, so I could bring it home and work on it.

I just realized that when I ask this group whether to buy or not to buy, I might be talking to a somewhat biased group! I need some objectivity. :-)

If it is less work & money to buy than do it. Parts trucks always makes sense to me. I would probably buy from what you are saying.

Looks decent from a distance ... if the details are pretty solid (not rusted out in wheel wells, cab corners, roof, etc.), then it's probably worth it.

go for it i would say it appears to be in okay shape as compared to the discription of your other truck... your truck is 100 miles away, go for this one and get your other one and take what this truck needs off your 100 mile away one.

At least you know what you are getting with the engine and can pay accordingly. Lots of options for the engine. Pretty easy.

I'd inspect the rest carefully... with a magnet to find heavy bondo before deciding.

If you get it for a $1000 as a parts truck that would be closer to a better price with missing the other stuff, i understand you don't need those parts but a driving one is $1500 on up.

Thanks, guys. I actually will need all of the missing parts - I don't have access to the other parts trucks - they are too far away.

Can anyone (probably everyone!) tell me what engines will fit on the 302 mounts? How difficult is it to adjust to other engines?

Thanks.

I just found this ad for a motor near me.

Ford 351W V8, C4 Transmission, 9" Rear Axle | engine, engine parts | Ottawa | Kijiji

Wouldn't that be a 351'M', not W? Can you tell from the pictures?

Would either fit on the 302 mounts?

You're right that the 351W never came in these trucks, while the 351M did. But people have swapped so many things around, that it's possible he pulled it out of a truck the PO had swapped it into.

It'd be nice if the pictures were such that we could make out the water pump or fuel pump clearly. But the valve covers do look like those for a 302/351W rather than a 351C/M/400 (6 bolts vs 8). Exhaust manifold bolt patterns look right too. If it's a Windsor, it would fit the same motor mounts and bell housing as a 302. He could also be confused and it could actually be a 302 that was original to what he pulled it out of, though I have no reason to say it's not a 351W from the pictures.

I had a 74 F100 had a 302windsor. Took it out and put in a 351windsor Bolted up to the transmission no problem. Had to make an alternator bracket was all. I do not know if a 351M bolt pattern is the same.

The 351c and 351w uses the small block bell housing and 351M and 400 use the big block 460 bell housing. If you can get a picture of the front of the engine without all of the stuff on it, it will be easier to id.

I thought the 351 Cleveland was a Big Block??? Windsors are small blocks??
