Good point Gary! How do you like your ZF?

I liked my ZF - although the truck is down for a resto at the mo. But it transformed the truck from a gas hog which made lots of noise on the highway due to high RPM, to something reasonable to drive. But, it is a truck transmission, so don't expect to speed-shift.

I'm sure you could cut and weld the two together.
There is a ZF swap thread where the owner made his own from bar stock
Is this the one you're talking about?

And to Gary's concern about the wrong shift pattern on the ****, if the 4 speed has reverse to the right and back, the only thing wrong on the **** would be that it wouldn't show that ther is a 5th gear (or where it is obviously). But everything it did show would be correct. (On the other hand, if the 4 speed had reverse to the right and forward...)

That's a good post! After reading that, I have a question regarding the torque rating and TMI's stroker engines. Can the ZF5 S-47 handle the torque output of Tim's 434 stroker? I know it is a truck transmission as it will be going into my 79 F250 4x4 so I'm not expecting quick shifts, it's the torque load I'm questioning.

The "-47" stands for a rating of 470 ft-lbs. And the "-42" is rated at 420. Will it hold up to a 434 stroker? Dunno, but I'm putting a -42 behind the 400 I'm building for Dad's truck, which Tim guesstimated at 500+ ft-lbs. My bet is that I can't couple that kind of torque to the ground so will never stress the tranny. Even towing I find that I spin the tires on Rusty with the 351M that's in it, so the 400 will as well.

Ford put these transmissions behind the 460's and diesels, and they seemed to survive quite well, so I'm not concerned.

another great point Gary! Sometimes I forget there is a difference between torque rated to the engine and torque as it hits the wheels!

Pay no never mind to the Torque rating. Guy surpass the rating 2-3 times with the diesel and really don't have any issues
