Okay doing an oil change on my 6.4 for the first time since I bought it, went and got an stp filter, and it looks different then the one that came out, need help quick to get my truck back on the road asap! Below are pictures of the 2 different filters (old one is in the box) and the cap. Cap said napa on it I believe

 

 

No idea why your not using Motorcraft filters. Anything else is just wrong.

 

Correct. Aftermarket filters do not fit right and allow unfiltered oil to circulate. Save the truck, get a Motorcraft filter.

You haven't??? Only use motorcraft, or racor, for the 6.0 and 6.4 The aftermarkets have been proven to not always push the drain down correctly allowing oil to just circulate and not filter.

 

Do yourself the a favor and stick to motocraft filters. The money you save buying substandard filters over the life of the truck will not equal one tank of fuel.

I would even stick to the stock air filter on stock truck.

 

As mentioned, Ford OEM only. Wal-mart sells the Motorcraft filter ( $20 ).

 

Come on Parkland, you've seen this discussion more than once, your just pulling our turbo actuator. Plug it in and blow some of the dust out.

 

I know I've seen warnings about the fuel filter, but I must have zoned out and not noticed anything about the oil filter.
The worst part is I think I paid more for this fram extragard than motocraft lol.

 

There are several 3rd party filters that do just fine but I won't change any minds on this particular forum and won't bother. That said STP is not one I am familiar with, some of the 3rd party filters require their own caps to make the filter seat properly.

MY Blackstone reports and 60K+ miles of using those "awful" filters that don't work are all the proof I need that they work just fine.

The ironic thing is if you have a wix/napa cap and try to use a motorcraft filter with it you will probably cause more problems than good since wix/Napa is one of those that requires a different cap than Ford's.

 

I pulled a wix filter out of a box along with a Motorcraft and they were the exact same. Right down to all the writing on the filter, looks, color, size, everything.

 

I think the main issue is with the patents and the need for different caps for aftermarket filters (licensed now perhaps?). Mess up the matching between the cap and the filter and bad things will almost certainly happen.

At any rate most people use 4-6 oil filters per year, so you have to ask yourself if it is worth saving perhaps $25 per year in filters to risk a $15,000 engine.

 

What number is the Motorcraft filter found at WalMart?.......seems so simple, go to WalMart pick up a Motorcraft oil filter, and Shell Rotella oil regular or synthetic, change the oil, and call it job done and sleep good knowing you've got a quality filter and quality oil in your engine!

 

I order Motorcraft filters online and they are delivered to my front door for about $17+ S&H ... say $19 a pop. On the rare occasion I find myself at Walmart I'll pick up a gallon or two of oil and by the time I am ready for an oil change I have the quantity I need. However, last oil change I decided to try Mobil syn oil for turbo diesels and ordered it online with Walmart store pickup. This was simply because I find that you can't rely on the oil sitting on the shelf when you happen to be in the store and I knew I'd have it waiting for me when I went to the store. Folks here can debate filters, just as they do oil brands, but I won't waste my time when I can get genuine Motorcraft filters delivered at a decent price.
