Would you trade if this were you?

I am currently driving a 2007 F150 XLT SuperCrew with a 6.5 box and 5.4 highest package they had in 2007. I have 78,000 miles on this truck and have had very little troubles. It is starting to show some signs of rust on the wheel lips and front box corners as well as the tailgate. I bought this truck 4 years ago at 52,000 miles.

I have found a 2012 F150 XLT SuperCrew with 6.5 box with eco-boost and tow package (tow mirrors). XLT custom package with the Plus package, also the off-road package. Options took 2 columns on the sticker! This thing has buckets in the front with console, has every option I have ever seen in an XLT except for the '14's leather and LED lights. Factory spray in liner, box side steps, & tailgate step. It only has 26,000 miles. This truck is as clean as I have ever seen a used truck. I can get this for a great price, under 15,000 trade difference. Sale price on new truck is $29,999.

Would I be crazy to make this trade or not!

Thank you ahead of time for your input!

It's your money and it is completely up to you. There is no best answer here.

Personally, I don't like to drive rusty vehicles. If you're seeing signs of rust now then you have 2 years or less before it looks a lot worse and value plummets. Also, dealers want vehicles under 80K miles on trade-in or the value plummets again. You're barely under that mark right now. (100K is urban legend, the number is 80K.)

So basically you're at the crest of the hill where you need to make a decision to keep it for a long time, or sell it now. Right now is the optimum time to sell if you're going to sell within the next few years. Otherwise drive it until the wheels fall off. If it wasn't getting rusty then this would be a different story.

I recently traded for a similar truck and was in a similar situation as you are. I had an 05 super duty 5.4 that ran very well but rust was starting to win. I got a quote to fix all the rust and I couldn't justify spending the money on a 10 year old truck. I traded for a 2012 xlt super crew eco boost with 30k. It has similar options except for not having leather. I am very happy with the truck so far (about 1k miles) and I think it was a very smart decision.

Thanks for input. I am looking very hard at this deal. I would like a new one, but that is another $10,000.

This 2012 should last me for a time. Prior to the 2007 F150, I had a 2005 F350 with 5.4. Funny how this 2012 F150 is rated to tow more than that F350!

Well, I went from a 2005 5.4L to a 2012 EcoBoost and I have to say I'm extremely happy with the choice I made. More power, better fuel economy empty, same fuel economy towing, Bigger Fuel tank, Integrated TBC (which is awesome) and ride is better too. It's a much better truck.

The finances are always hard to give advice on. Do you think you could sell your truck privately for $15k? Seems like that's what they are giving you on trade. It sounds like a good deal to me, but I'm not you.

I was thinking the same thing, but then after feeling the power of the ecoboost I started to think a little different!

I would have to disagree, somewhat. This number is changing. My father traded in a 2010 F150 about a year ago...with 220K on the clock. Still got 11K for it, dealer trade. I was quite surprised.

Rust is a losing battle unless you replace the entire bed sections, fenders, doors and what ever else is cancerous. Then you're talking a boatload of cash.

For a difference of 15K, I'd say go after it or make a commitment to the 2007 truck.

I have an 07 XLT that I gave to my daughter and now have a 12 Platinum eco. I love the eco so far. A lot more seat of the pants pick up. More leg room in the back. I bought my 12 with 19k miles for just over $30K in Jan of 2015. Super clean truck that I found at a dodge dealer.

Checked in the '14's but they are still $6-7,000 more. This is not our main driver, that is the '12 Expedition we bought new two years ago. This is just my boat haulin', ice fishin', stuff haulin', and daily driver to work. I only put on 6500-8000/year. The 12 is about as close to new as I can find. They even let me drive it home tonight for the weekend to try out.

So far, I am very impressed. This truck still KBB's at just under $34,000 and they are asking $29,999. Sticker was $44,470.

Thank you all for the input!

My 2007

2012 I am looking at.

Other than spending more money and driving a different truck you arent gaining much. They are both half tons, both will do exactly what you need. So you arent gaining anything in terms of payload or tow capacity. Sure its nicer though.

What you would be doing is avoiding the rusty headache your truck will be in a few years, and soon your miles will devalue your truck. Dealers love them under 80, 90 and 100k. After that you take a huge hit.

With all that being said if you are going to go in debt and have a payment anyways and rust in that big of a problem, in my personal opinon I would go for the new aluminium body style F150. Payment will stay the same just a couple more years depending on how you worked it if you would be interested.

I love the last generation body style, I think its my favorite and it would be an upgrade but is it really enough of an upgrade to justify it? If you are going to upgrade would be it worth going all out and really upgrading to something that wont be a rust bucket?

All things to consider.

A new 2015 is $10,000 more and $175 more a month. Trying to keep the payment under $250 so I can still have plenty of spending money as the last one was paid for after 2 years of ownership.

I was in similar boat couple weeks back. Had a super nice 07 Supercrew Lariat. Knowing it had a decent value as it's Lariat and has 77k miles on it. Decided to trade in for remaining 2014 in dealer inventory. Was pleased with the deal. Basically needed a better tow vehicle as I own a travel trailer. Wanted to drive it around the west coast, didn't intend to stay locally. If I didn't have the travel trailer, would have kept the 07. Just evaluate on your need then decide on it. The ecoboost is awesome, enjoying the ride very much. The gas mileage isn't what I hoped for yet at 16 mpg on this evening's 300 miles trip at 75 most of the way. It should get better after couple thousand miles.
