The PA Chapter's "Somebody Call My Momma" May 2015 Chat and B/S Thread

My truck is due for inspection in June, but I have a CEL light that will cause issues with it passing because of the lean codes. Need to clear it and see how long it takes for the light to come back on and try to get it inspected while the light is off praying that it passes.

Morning Neil and Bud
Yeah, that's a nice perk to have a mechanic that knows you take care of your stuff and can move it along thru inspection quickly. We're in the same camp there. I did have him go thru the OBS pretty thoroughly first time in case either of us missed anything to be sure, but from here on out that won't be the case.

No doubt, Pat. I am pretty much done with shops that I don't know people at for state inspection. I took the Expy in to a dealership once, and came out with nearly $3000 in repairs before they'd sticker it. Um, nope.

I wish that I could, but if the PCM does not have enough "drive cycles" on it the state's computer will not allow the emissions check to be completed. The last time was when the alternator died and the battery too. It took about 100 miles before the CEL came back on.

The OBS and the Bull are emissions exempt here - one for mileage (under 5000 miles no check) and one for diesel exemption. The Expy is the only one that gets emissions, and that's a visual + gas cap.

That whole thing just sounds like one giant PITA. Nebraska had safety inspection, up until 73 or so, then dropped all of them. Only time you have to have a vehicle inspected, is if you're bringing it in from out of state, so they can check the VIN with the title.

Up here, you are exempt from the emissions if the vehicle is prior to the 1984 model year (if memory serves me right) and if the vehicle is new or not more than 2 years older than the current model year. Ours is visual and as stated, the PCM is checked for any emissions related codes via the internet to the state's computer in Albany.

This is pretty much what I end up paying, unless something needs fixed. Can't recall the breakdown between emissions and safety.
