[QUOTE=Army RET;

Here are two pics that I hate to share; hopefully it'll serve as a reminder to y'all. Pics are only about 8 hours old (heading out tomorrow).

I forgot to lock it once hitched.[/QUOTE]

Ouch! That is too bad.

Don't these 5th wheels lock automatically like big rigs?

Most do not (use a manual sliding bar to hold pin)
but there are some that DO such as the Reese R16 that I have (it has jaw's like a big rig)

Just wondering. Self locking 5th wheels would lessen the chance of dropping the trailer.

That's why it's really wise to do a "pull test" before fully raising the landing gear.

On a "lock jaw" system such as my Reese R16 absolutely

But on a "sliding bar" system, even more important is a VISUAL check

In my case I did get the visual ... a green pin extends when latched. I then pulled both forward n reverse maybe an inch or two. Then I proceeded forward n boom. I forgot to lock it in place, Husky 16K w/ slider.

a lot?

it's 32 ft, 35 ft overall and 8500#s but I used to tow it with an F150 with a 4.7 so ths is a big step up. Piece of cake by comparison.

this is the 150 I used to tow with! Imagine this flying through a rainstorm coming out of the hills north of lexington, Ky,going 75!!? The 5.4 came home last weekend wth a 45 mph crosswind and did just fine. It's not always what ya got but how you make good use of it. <br/>.
