Need 6.0L advice - first time buyer

So I'm considering buying a 2004 dump truck with this engine. Truck currently needs the head gasket replaced. I'm mechanically inclined and wouldn't think twice about replacing the head gasket on a gas V8; anything special about this engine? It appears you *can* do this job without removing the cab?

My concern is what I'm getting in to. I've heard a lot of negative things about the 6.0L diesel...although some say "do this / remove that" and you've got a a really good engine.

When you replace the gaskets, what else needs to replaced? Head studs? Other seals / gaskets? How can I tell if the injectors are OK, turbo is OK, etc? Other major things to check? Truck has less than 100k miles on it, body and chassis in good shape, 4x4, and cheap money. I'm tempted.

i studied he 6.0 before purchase. lot of scary info out there, but thanks to the after market they have a cure for most of its ailments.

if needs head g then studs a must, EGR delete an option to consider as it removes another trouble spot. also new oil cooler or external oil cooler kit.

i would look at this sight in the 6.0 forum , and off site at vendors such as bullet proof, they have many educational videos on u tube about their findings on the 6.0

The head gaskets can be done in cab. Passenger side is a bit worse. As far as removing things, it's mostly Egr valve, cooler. I ran mine with the Egr for over 100k with no issues.

If you're planning on using a tuner, you definitely want head studs. Again, I had no issues without them. The turbo should be inspected and reconditioned. There's the blue spring mod, and a couple others(I've been out of one since'13).

I would post this in the 6.0 section for better detailed info. I personally would buy another 6.0 in a heart beat.

Yes, the 6.0 has its issues, but there are a ton of sites that will walk you through what needs to be done.

Youtube: search for Diesel Tech Ron. Excellent videos and explanations from someone with a lot of diesel experience on Ford engines.

Powerstroke.org: Great forums specifically for Ford Powerstroke

Powerstrokehelp.com: Good explanations from a shop owner on what needs to be addressed on this engine

You're really sending people to another board and not to FTE's 6.0L forum?
6.0L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

We have several FoMoCo techs, and some independent shop owners including one with 1 million+ miles in a 6.0 and several complete bare block tear downs documented. Doesn't get a lot better than this

He was trying to be helpful. I'm posting here because this is my "go-to" site for questions and advice, and helping others where I can. However, if I can't find it here, I don't mind looking elsewhere. I think the "assumption" was that this site was the primary and others were secondary if necessary.
