battery group/size

What is the correct group/size for these trucks? If it matters, my truck is a '68 RANGER originally equipped with a 360, but now has a 302.

I have never figured what the heck group size was either. I look at post location, 525 CCA or more if you like and have been using least expensive battery that I could find. Replaced one in my 66 a couple years back that had been in it for 9 years. I think it is a waste of money to buy expensive batterys.

AFAIK, they are supposed to be a group 27 - whether just a plain il 27 or a 27F I don't know.

Sez the man from North Carolina.. Somebody from North Dakota may think differently. I agree though people probably buy way more battery than they need.

27? That's a small battery for such a large truck originally equipped with a 360. I had a late '80s model 4cyl mustang that called for a group 34.

Not sure if you knew but you are asking about your 1968 in a 1961-1966 section. Might not matter in this case but for most purposes you probably wouldn't want to be asking us.

I did not notice that. Probably why I'm not getting many responses.

A group 27F is the correct battery for your truck. The "F" designation gives the battery the reversed terminal locations ((+) closest to the solenoid) so the battery cables don't have to cross. A group 27 will fit, but the (-) terminal will be near the solenoid.

The battery group refers to the physical size of the battery, not the electrical capacity. Just because the group number is a larger number doesn't indicate the battery is physically larger or has higher amp hour capacity.

Thanks for all the input guys, but I decided to go with a group 36 batt. I did find the group 27f mentioned here but I liked the way the 36 filled the battery tray. Dimensionally it's just slightly larger than the 27 but I got a few more CCA's.

R-27F (70 amp) & R-27FA (80 amp), both 6 13/16" wide; 12" length at top; 8 1/8" high, were the largest batteries available for 1965/79 F100/350's.

R-22F was the smallest battery, R-24F was the medium size. Neither should be used with an FE engine.
