For us stuck in CA you need the 50 state smog sticker still on the truck, they all have them. Then get it safety inspected by CHP, Long PIA process and not that expensive but if the deal is right well worth it.

Nance ,I would go back with a 6.0 also the first thing I would do is add a Low Jack system with Jimmie Jammers on the doors and some kind of disconnect devise for starting the truck , I also live in a high truck theft area and the resent thefts lately is tail gates, I seen a truck like yours today in Modesto , I followed it, got up to the rear end and Noticed no dent upper tail gate and Lic plate we need to put this out in the Nor Cal Chapter add some Photos .
Hi, didn't know there was a Nor Cal Chapter even. loosing hope, been over two weeks, used in burglary on 4/12 in East San Jose, found that out on 4/20.

I've been "buying another" since 2004. Just recently bought my current truck (2003 Excursion) after owning an 04 Excursion, 04 Superduty, and that's being a previous 99 7.3 guy.
They really are good motors after you hit the problem areas. But with a website like FTE, and a couple others, so many fine folks have listed problems and solutions to the point that the average DIY mechanic can almost diagnose their issues via the forums.

No doubt I would get another that had never been tuned or abused.
The 6.7 is still too high dollar, even for a beat up '11 or '12 with high miles.
The 6.4 will never be reliable AND 50 state legal, you have to choose. Parts are very expensive.
The 7.3s are all 12+ years old. They are loud, under powered and state of the art tech for 1995. And that's coming from someone that owns one. Add in the fact that the 99-04 had smaller brakes and its a no go.
The 6.0 is the only diesel I would go and buy, '05 to '07.
I love the look of the 08-10 but I would only buy it as a V10. They are a beast. Same fuel mileage and pulling power of a 6.4 without the things that make the 6.4 a nightmare for you and your wallet.

Well I was thinking of selling my 2006 6.0 liter but after reading all this I'm not sure. I love my truck but i have 134000 miles on it I its still stock except for the blue spring. And I only did that because I had a fuel leak at the pressure valve. I know what has to be done if I want to keep it. But I am stressed out over the cost and and how much of it I can do myself. I have been very lucky I haven't had anything major go wrong yet. I do try to keep up with maintenance but I am only a weekend small repair guy. I'm a long way from being able to put in a oil cooler. If it wasn't my primary vehicle I would enjoy learning as I go and bulletproof my baby myself. You guys sure do make me want to try. I'm not ready to let her go!!

If you have any mechanical skills you can work this engine, just search this site and others, you did the blue spring and that's a start. just make sure you get something to monitor the health of the beast! This forum has actually saved me some money and heart ache and now I know this is the last truck I will buy!!

Love this truck so much when my engine went bad I just replaced it. With the knowledge gained From this forum combined with the "bulletproof" mods I did to the new engine right out of the gate I know this will be the last truck I will own.

Trying to keep up with your threads Nance!!!
What is the insurance offering you $s wise on the '06? Can you up it with all the bux you spent to BP it? (sometimes they will look at real receipts).
I have two friends with 6.4s: one drives the chit out of it (or his wife does), hauls HEAVY and has had a water pump and some other minor problem in about 150K miles. They seem to do well when used hard.
The bogey is my other friend, who does short trips and only complains about heck-uv-a crap mileage, has had no issues. BUT and that is a big BUTT they drain the fuel separator monthly, change the oil every 2k, and never EVER shut it down when it is in regen (pouring extra fuel in to burn the DPF off).
That all said, I'd step up to a 6.7 and figure out how to make the dollars work (btw they are harder to steal as are the 6.4s), or get another 6.0 and both get it "right" and do some anti-theft things to it.
My friends with 6.7s just love 'em, and some never went through any dark days of other Ford generations, so they have no clue what we worry about. The 6.7s just run, with a billion things going on under the hood....
But you asked 6.0 or 6.4, so my advice is to go 6.0 -- some techs I talked to won't even work on the 6.4s...

This thread alone makes me want to find an excuse to go fire up my 6.0 and mash the throttle....
I would love to move up a generation in truck, but don't trust the 6.4 at all mainly due to the expense/complexity that comes with the possible repairs. And can't stand the thought of paying well into the $30ks for a 2011 6.7 with 150k miles that's probably due for replacement of every "wear and tear" item on the truck. Now when the next generation Super Duty hits the market and everyone else is lining up to buy a $70k truck, I will jump all over a 2012-13ish model if the newly released models soften the market. Otherwise, I'm going to sit contently with the 6.0 until then and skip the 6.4 altogether.
Best narrative I ever heard on this similar topic is this; lose an injector in a 6.0 = replace injector...lose an injector in a 6.4 = replace engine.
