Redneck gen/alt swap

This was non labor intensive, cheap, and quick. Although Henry is probably rolling in his grave.

Should work so long as it is solid with no vibrations. Is it the light on the subject but how is the belt, pulley alignment? Looks like the alternator may be a slight bit forward out of alignment.

Henry would like it. It looks to me like the belt alignment is off quite a bit though maybe it's the photo or parallax.

You are both correct, the alternator was about 3/16" proud when I took the pic. That has been remedied with washers at the engine mount, and the upper spacer was shaved accordingly. Also, since the rear of the alternator has a slight taper, it had a tendency to walk forward - that too has been remedied. No vibration at all, very smooth. It's a true one-wire 80 amp alternator.

You started off with a NEW alternator, cleaned and painted the mounting strap, and made sure that it all lined up and was securely mounted...ain't nothin' redneck 'bout that! Nice work...

Very cool, I use the 3 wire GM alternators all the time, backhoes, tractors, etc..
For those who want to do this cheap get a 1975 camaro alternator for about $30 from autozone..wire it up like this. Simple.

I have not had good luck with the one wire units as they needed to be spun up to work, the 3 wire works great at idle.

Nice job on the bracket!
Can you give us some details on how you managed it? It almost looks like it was pressed.

Note the small pulley. It charges at the git-go, and charges fine at 500 r/m idle speed.

I can't take any credit for the bracket except for the cleaning, painting, and notching for the screws. That's the 1950 OEM Ford generator bracket. Note it in the first pic.

Possibly the same, but it came with the '50 F-6 and I'd be willing to bet that it's never been removed until now.

Well, Ford never had alternators in 1950 afaik. I don't think anybody else did either. That's why I was wondering.

He means it is the generator bracket that was on the truck.

Wait, I was certain he called it a "1950 OEM alternator bracket", sorry for any confusion.

Nope, it reads generator, unless he edited it.
