thinking about buying an 08 f250, I could use some guidance please

Morning everyone.

I am seriously considering buying an 08 f250 crew cab with the 5.4 triton. The truck has 60k miles and is really clean. I attached pics of the door sticker and Vin, I was wondering if anyone had a way to pull up some info on the truck with the info.

It has a slight rod knock and the dealer is working with me and will replace the engine and still keep it well below book value, or I can buy as is and drive it for a while and or put a new motor in right away for the heck of it.

I will be paying cash for the truck and want it to be as reliable as I can make it, since it will be a family rig for us as well. I can no longer drive my wife's escape with the kiddos in the back seat, not enough room lol.

Now my question is which engine?

I would like to either stuff a 6.2 in for the heck of it lol.

Put in a new 5.4 and try and build it up a little if I can. Maybe even supercharge it.

Or a 6.0?

What do you guys think would be best? Thanks for your time

I would never purchase a truck with a knocking motor, period. They would have to replace the entire motor before I would even consider the purchase, and the replacement motor would be an OEM replacement motor with 0 miles.

6.0 requires a different tranny so that's an extra expense I wouldn't want.

6.2 would be awesome, just make sure the transmission bolt pattern and the engine mounts for the engine are the same or interchangeable.

To be honest, I would steer clear. If the engine is blown after 60k miles, the truck probably had a pretty hard life, was improperly maintained, or possibly flood damaged resulting in a hydrolock.

Like I said, a slight knock. And I will be putting a brand new motor in. Just trying to figure out what motor.

It can't be flood damage since we do not have floods up here. The motor in my dads 2000 expedition makes the same noise and has done for 100k miles. The truck is really clean of course that doesn't mean it hasn't been driven hard.

And everything else about the truck is solid. Like I said I will have a brand new motor in it, just trying to figure out which motor.

There is no such thing as a "slight knock".

Engines don't really swap like they used to. Going from a 5.4, you might be able to get a 6.8 in without much trouble, but anything else will involve all different electronics.

Yeah I realize that.

I do like the 5.4 but am not having much luck navigating sites as to a brand new engine for it. Guess I may have to wait until I can get to a computer.

personally I would pass unless it was part of a donor/pateint pair plan. super nice body with blown engine on one hand and rust bucket with minty engine on the other hand.

When first reading your post I though you are a newbie that was going to learn the hard way on a truck that needs fixing but after rereading it and looking at your stats you're obviously looking for a truck to build.
My vote goes for a V10 swap (I might be slightly biased), I very much doubt the 6.2 will bolt to the current transmission or be happy with the five-speed auto. Again with the transmission on the 6.0 it will need to be upgraded also but you'd have a diesel. If time and budget are big enough the sky is the limit on the engine swaps! The cheapest swap would probably be the V10 or a boosted 5.4.

I thought i remember mark saying the internals are different in the trans for the 5.4 to 6.8. Seems something was built stronger for the v10 and diesels that is a weaker component that he suggested a 5.4 trans wouldn't live very long behind the v10.

You are correct. Mark did mention that, but i think it was in reference to 4r100's, Not sure if the internals of a 5r110W are different from Gas to diesel.

Gas 4r100's only have 4 pinion planetaries, V10 and Diesel have 6 pinion planetaries. the OD in a diesel is only 4, but in a 5.4 gas version, it is only a 3..

I'd look for a different truck. You mention "building up the 5.4", there's not much more HP available there, it already is pretty much maxed for low end torque with 385 ft/lbs stock and it already has a high flow intake and 3" exhaust.

I'd drop in a 3v 6.8 V10. From my research it should fit with minimal issues, such as cutting the fan shroud shorter. I'm not sure if the computer needs to be swapped, or if 5 star tuning could load a V10 tune on a V8 computer.

Much easier to find a 2011 with a 6.2 or a 2005+ with a 3v V10 already in it.

Thanks for the advice guys I appreciate it. I am just not sure if I can pass up the price yet or not. Later today I am taking it to a shoo I trust and they are going to run tests on it to see what's actually wrong..

I spoke with the lot owner again yesterday and he said his tech said the problem is the can phaser? I am new to the modular engines/new trucks lol. Never bought one above a 94.

On of the reasons I like this truck so much is because it is fairly basic, like my 94 and I love the xl package.

What is the can phaser problem? I cannot search the site from my phone for some reason it won't let me.

Lots of things can make a 5.4 tap or tick. Mine is in the shop today for that. Phasers wear and make noise. I used a stethoscope on my engine and the valve covers up front were quiet- so mine isn't a phaser issue.

Make them fix it before you buy it. Phasers are only a couple hundred bucks- sounds like they're not going to replace the engine. You could get stuck with that yourself. I'd only buy it after they fix the tapping noise.

They will fix the noise/replace the engine if need be. Or I can buy it for even cheaper and take it to a shop of my choosing. Any route I go the truck will still be way under book value

The 6.2 will not bolt up the the 5R110W. Different bell housing.
Which ever truck you pull the donner out of get the ECM,TCM and wire harnesses too IF its other than a 5.4/Torque Shift combo your bolting in.
As a rule the gas and diesel transmissions are slightly different internally within the same model range. eg; A 5R110W for the gasser is different internally from the 5R110W intended for a diesel. Yes it will physically bolt up but the diesel trans is heaver duty. The torque input of a diesel is greater than a gasser. So a gas trans behind a diesel wont last long. Now you can go the other way...a diesel trans into a gasser. Mark will correct me if Im wrong on this.
Your path of least resistance is to rebuild of replace the 5.4.
