91 5.8 into 93 (with 5.8) Swap

Hi All,

I've got a 93 with a filthy tired motor...180k miles on the clock, in need of RnR... But I've also got a 91 with about 10k miles on a rebuild...

Will I be able to swap this motor from the 91 into the 93? going from C6 to e4OD transmission in the 93 as well...any idea what I might be running into?

THANKS!!!

Dave

If they are stock those two motors are identical, just don't try to use any wiring from the '91 in the '93. You will also have to reuse the '93 distributor as I believe the TFI module was moved from the distributor to the fender in '92 so the wiring harness and connectors at the dizzy are different along with the TFI modules being electrically and physically different.

Agree that this would be a direct long block swap.

One note, check the cam gear on the distributed from the '91 engine, there were 2 gears used, cast and steel, you'll need to match the gear that came out of the '91 and swap if needed to the '93 distributor.

Other wise using all the intake and pollution junk from the '93 swapped over, and the engine mounts, you should have no problems with this replacement.

There would only be a steel gear on the distributor if the engine had a roller cam, and the 5.8 didn't get a roller cam until 1994.

Thanks for that info, found that problem when installing a '94+ roller cam 5.8 in the '92, and didn't know what year it changed to the steel gear.

Swap done, strange problems....Starter and Alternator woes

Ok, the swap went flawless....until it came time to start er up...

The starter didn't want to turn the engine over... Good battery, original starter, so I decided to swap it over for a rebuilt.

Same issue....got crazy and decided to let the starter hang from the wires to see if my wiring was good...used a jumper cable for ground and the starter motor ran...great, let's see if I'm getting bad ground...starter engaged and started right up...great, right?

Except the fact that the starter free wheels on the flywheel...won't stop engaging...is the alignment off? How far off would this be? No grinding...the starter isn't trying to run, it just goes for a ride with the flywheel.

To add insult to injury, the alternator that tests fine at the parts store isn't working either...all 12v leads to it show continuity to the positive terminal...what gives!?

Any ideas out there? I'm scratching my head here and not sure what I'm missing...the two seem inter related...

HELP,

93 e350 super wagon with 91 transplanted 5.8 (e4od)

Starter free wheeling fixed...

The solenoid was wired wrong. The alternator wires were on the wrong side applying voltage to the starter causing it to engage...weird, but fixed.

Thanks for the replies that encouraged me to embark on this Odyssey!
