Just a heads up, the BPD oil to air cooler set up shouldn't be an excuse to neglect your cooling system. Not saying you would, I'm just throwing it out there.

 

I had BPD cooler installed a couple months ago after second oil cooler plugged up. Removing the ac condensor made it easier to install. Also installed their remote oil filter kit. Very happy with the new system. Also got the cold weather kit. Expensive but don't worry about high oil temps anymore. Alwaysed maintained coolant system and had a filter too. It still plugged up. Good luck with the install the directions are very good and their cust service also very helpful.

 

You are, or course, RIGHT.

But "NORMAL" cooling system maintenance shouldn't have to include aggressive chemical/distilled water flushing and oil cooler replacements, etc.

My previous truck, a 1994 6.5L diesel Suburban, bought new and owned by me for more than 20 years, got (in my mind) normal cooling system maintenance.

I replaced the coolant twice in 210,000 miles during that 20+ years.

I think you're right.

I did my first change at 60,000 miles (from factory fill) .......That might have been (a little late) around the 5-7 year point......and I switched it to DEXCOOL.

Then I flushed/replaced it again at about the 14 year point at around 150,000-160,000.....

The coolant was clean and clear.


I sold it in JUL of 2014 at around 210,000. It was ready for a change and I told the new owner that he needed to do a flush/fill.



Knowing what I know now and owning a 6.0L CornBinder, I don't think I'll let it go that long!!

BPD makes a bigger cooler and you should order it. When pulling our large toy hauler threw the desert In the summer your oil temp can really climb. I mean like 250 degree's. Way to hot. If your not towing it's fine. They want $600.oo to upgrade the cooler only. Rip off. Going after market on the cooler.

I had a BE35 Bonanza for many years. Put in the IO550, 3 blade prop and many extra's and me and the son use to travel all over the place. Loved it, some of the best years of my life. Wish I would of never sold it! God bless

Thought it was a Model 35! (1949 model)

I used to fly a C-model. Every model was a great airplane!! Wig-wagging itself through the air!(the Baron did it too so it wasn't just a V-tail thing!)

 

Exactly! I will never neglect any maintenance on my truck but IMO the OEM oil cooler is a bad design, nothing should clog that easy. I'm glad to be getting rid of it!

 

It was 1962 P model. Really liked the way it flew with the engine upgrade. Use to go to the EAA fly in's every year and camp out. Been to all four corners of the US with it and then some, loved the plane.

Well guys, I finished up the BPD oil cooler install Saturday and my truck is at a local shop getting the AC system recharged right now. The install was actually not bad at all. The hardest part was getting the transmission cooler out so I could put the lowering brackets on. Everything else was a breeze! Now my oil temps are staying lower than my coolant temps by an average of about 7-10 degrees. Well worth the money IMO!

 

Glad to hear the install went well! I've been very happy with my BPD setup & I believe you will as well.

 

You mentioned you were going to attempt the install without opening up the A/C......I am assuming you thought against it?
