help with gem,,,,,,
1999 ranger 2wd auto transmission, no power windows, no keyless entry,,,
the gem in this truck has gave me problems forever,, tranmission goes into limp mode, no speedo, everything else seems to work ok,,,,changed the abs sensor 3 times no change changed the 2 front sensors.. no change,,no vss on tranny,,,,, if i drive this truck for a while usually 10 miles or more it will get speedo and transmission shifts right, as long as i keep it warm up it works ok, but the next day will have to start all over again,,,, finally broke down and bought a gem from used parts house,,, they said my gem in the truck was the wrong one,,,it is marked as 2wd 2003,,,,,,so they got me one from a 1999,,, well it has only 2 plugins on it not 4 like the one in my truck, tried the gem with just 2 plugins,,, windshiedwasher came on and wont shut off,,, drove it around still had same problem now with the washer problem ended up putting the one from 2003 back in,,,,,,,
i need some one with a ranger like my description above to see if there are just 2 plugins are there 4,,,,,, any help please, retired on fixed income cant afford 80 dollars and them not taking it back becasue it being electrical.....
i have checked and cleaned and sandpapered and grinded on grounds all over truck,,, ran new ground wires,,,,,
any ideas any one please.....

I have a '99 Ranger, auto, 2wd, crank windows, but I don't think I have sensors on the front wheels. Perhaps yours has 4 wheel ABS rather than the rear wheel ABS mine has. Maybe the extra plugs are for your front wheel sensors. I was not aware that the truck had any gem, in fact nothing about the truck seems gemy.

The 99 in my signature that has 4WABS, rear speed sensor only has 2 pins.
There have been two fairly recent members posting about intermittent speed sensor woes. One found a wire with strands broken under the swollen insulation about 6" inside the split wire loom covering, of the rear differential mounted speed sensor wiring. His theory is that his intermittent speed-o was the result of wind whipping the speed sensor wiring back & fourth, or it was a damaged wire from the get-go, that took a while for the flexing to break the wire strands.
The other member found the rear speed sensor wiring insulation damaged where it travels up over the transmission/bell housing area to the firewall computer electrical connector & surmised it was damaged when the tranny was re-installed.
SO, if all else fails, you might consider rigging an end to end continuity check of those two wires, while doing a wiggle test along it wire run, with your multimeter in the audible mode.

Another thing to consider:

Even though the TSB referenced above seems to apply only to 2000-'01 model years, I have read that some late '99 build Rangers actually have the same wiring as the '00 model. It's a longshot, but it still might be worth a look.
