Headlight switch, blinker trouble....

Hello Everyone,

Been a long time since I posted anything, my truck is pretty much done, so I havent really needed too much, Or had a lot of time to browse the board and provide too much and Ive been overseas for the Military for a large part of last year and the year before that. Installed the hollow door seals today and it is a pia with goop everywhere that Ill have to clean up and now you really have to slam the doors shut, so Ill wait a week or so then open the door and shave some of the seal off if needed. Anyhoo.

All my electronics work fine, mostly, blinkers work fine, brake lights work fine, headlights, taillights, inside stuff....Individually....

Whenever I have my lights powered on via Headlight Switch, my Drivers side tail-light is extremely bright and it almost looks like both filaments are lit. (1157 bulbs in both sides) Passenger side is fine. Whenever I engage my drivers side turn signal, I can just barely see my drivers side flash, but it flashes.....Brakes are pretty much the same way......Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not sure why its doing this, but if I recall correctly, its been like that for a long time....

Grounding problem......Tail-light housing bad, somehow wires messed up, headlight switch defective....???? Any way to easily troubleshoot this?

1955 F-100, Have an EZ-Wiring kit installed, 12 V system, new battery.

Thanks Everyone!

Patrick

Easiest way I know, to narrow down the options, is to pull the bulb then with you VOM in hand, turn on the parking light. Touch both of the contacts inside the bulb socket. Only one of them should show current.. Now turn the parking off and do the same test by activating the turn signal. Again, only one should have current. You just identified the turn signal and parking light wires.
If they both show current, it is possible you have the same power source for both lines. Trace them back and see what you find. Make sure dirt and grease haven't allowed both internal contacts to touch.

I would focus on two areas: grounds and filaments. Recheck and improve the grounds for each lighting location. Second, confirm and adjust wiring so that the brighter filament is lit for the brake function. Seems like it shouldn't matter until it does.

I just went through this on my truck and what I found out was I had the leads from my tail lights mixed up. One lead runs the dim function and the other runs the bright. Most tail lights are grounded through the body of the light which may or may not work very well. I ended up using a jumper wire from the light mounting stud to a clean ground and it worked fine.

Exactly! I verified my ground this morning and I put another tail-light housing on to verify that, and it ended up being I had the wires crossed on the tail-light to the harness. Wasnt aware it would bleed over when I initially installed it, but that was years ago and I rarely drive it too much at night, so it was a trouble that you didnt really notice that much.

Really appreciate all the replies.

Thanks.
