PS tune up ? $ n Waste oil compared IDI
I have a IDI and was wondering what is the minimum now for good parts if you did a tune that was equivalent to injector pump, injectors and glow plugs on a IDI for a PS.
I know the PS are superior engines but can you run waste oil in them like the IDI with no problems long term ?
I have been looking at them and just don't know if I want a computer mobile even though it is much better.
Thanks for help.

PSD injectors have a considerably longer service life than IDI ones, they are more expensive to replace, but they are a unit injector, so essentially the injection pump and injector all in one. My 96 F250 has around 27,000 hours of runtime and 253K miles(pick any reasonable average speed to multiply those hours by, it is no small number) and still has the factory injectors, it would run better with new ones, but it was still 100% reliable until the ZF5 puked it's guts.
Glow plugs are a bit more time consuming to change, but the parts themselves are the same cost. Again, PSD glows tend to last considerably longer than IDI ones.
I wouldn't run waste oil through either engine and expect no problems long term. Injection components are only part of the issue, cracked valve seats and heads are the bigger problem caused by the higher btu value of the waste oil.

A cummins with an injection pump and nozzles operates on the same theory as the 6.9/7.3 IDI.
An old injection pump/nozzle system is as good as it gets for running waste oil and biodiesel. The difference is that properly prepared biodiesel isn't going to wear anything excessively compared to dino diesel. Waste oil, no matter how well its filtered, will do long-term damage to the injection system. However, on a 30 year old dirt-cheap IDI, the injection system will last a few years of daily driving I bet, and how long do you really expect the truck to last?
I used to make biodiesel and run it in my IDI. I am confident that my fuel was well made and did no damage to my truck. But after buying a PSD, shelling out $1300 for rebuilt injectors and getting a better job, there's no way the savings of biodiesel would make the risk worthwhile to me.
