Can 2000 F450 Rear Axle Assembly be Replaced with Later Axles?

Hello,

I have a 2000 F450, 7.3, 4x4, dually, VIN 1FDXF47F0YEA44380, with 30k miles, That needs a new rear axle - hub retainer threads on axle housing are stripped (nut welded on by previous owner). This axle is a case ID F81A-4001-BK, 4.88 ratio, 11.25 ring gear, with a 41.5" spring center. I have heard that the '99-'02 axles had issues until Ford switched over to the later square housed axles in 2002 or 2003 (Dana 110, I think). Does anyone know if it is possible to adapt these later (2002- 2004) axles onto a 2000 F450? And if so, what would be involved?
I really appreciate any help on this!

Thanks a bunch!

You could start by calling a junkyard and seeing what the Hollendar manual says about other years that would fit. You likely have ABS, so be sure that feature survives the swap.

Looking up your part on car-part.com only pulls up results for 1999 and 2000. That site is pretty good at showing you what will work WITHOUT modification.

Of course, that doesn't mean a later axle can't be used with modification or extra parts- it just means it likely isn't a simple out-in proposition.

If I were a betting man, I'd guess the only real difference is probably the U-bolts and plate. BUT- that's just my best guess. I'd go look at one and see first-hand what the differences are.

ford is famous for mixing up axels on their trucks just about anything would probably fit. I had a 450 dwdr axel on my 04 e-350 kuv from the factory, could have put drw but never needed to.
