Im having a hard time locating a tie road and tie rod ends for my 1974 Ford f600

Anyone have a source for same?

Have you tried NAPA? They're petty good with the old HD stuff, provided you can get them to look through the catalogs for it.

You're gonna have to figure it out sooner or later, cuz sawbones says I have one foot in the grave, another on a banana peel.

Parts Catalog usage 101:

LEFT: Here's the pic of the application chart and various parts lists for these little charmers:

To determine the weight capacity of the front axle (unless you know it), post the AXLE code stamped on the Warranty Plate.

Tie rod ends thread into the "reach rod" that usually doesn't need to be replaced, unless it's bent. Long reach rod connects the left steering arm to the right steering arm.

Drag link connects the Pitman Arm on the steering gear to the left steering arm, you probably need it too.

Its the "reach rod" bill somehow it got ground down on one side where it threads in on the passenger side... I missed it while rebuilding the truck until I had it up on a lift last week building the custom exhaust (which goes into integral 6 inch stacks built as a part of the headache rack)

one option is to put a piece of tube over it and plug weld it along one axis... but I would rather replace it... and after 40 plus years of commercial service as a Peterson cat service truck and then private hands once or twice this truck got its fair share of use.. so if I can access the parts I would go through ALL the steering components. The truck needs to be chp commercial officer proof for me to get happy with it.. even though it will be registered historic

As an aside I was really surprised upon inspection of the reach rod and how lightweight the tubing was... its not beefy in thickness at all like the fire engine which almost feels solid.. and this was a power steering truck too...but some ford engineer figured it out who was way smarter than me

Just about everything save the rear end on the truck has had my hands on it... with two more f600s in the pipeline right behind it.. the supercab project and the fire engine

Yes.. I will have to learn the parts manual.. but there is NO substitute for your experience.. and there will never be,,,

Kudos to Ron Stanley of Rons Welding in Redding Ca.. I planned it all out but his bender made it happen and now there are two flowmaster 50s tucked up one on top of the other on the passenger side of the truck above frame height that tie into the dual stacks.. hardest exhaust he has ever done... and a creation of beauty.. twin 2 1/2 inch into my 3 inch heavy wall square.. up to the 6 inch slant cut stacks old school.

 

To find out which reach rod you need, post the AXLE code stamped on the Warranty Plate.

 

Bill.. I have the vin.. the other tags on the truck have long since disappeared.. but I'll look for other evidence ...

VIN won't help, because it doesn't contain any axle info.

Edit: Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch, has the AXLE code and etc. stamped on it. It might have been painted over.

Safety Standard Certification Label glued to B pillar below the striker plate, only has the production date & VIN printed on it.

You can get a copy of the trucks original build sheet by passing along the VIN to martiauto.com

I have the riveted vin tag on the door... no other tags are available... well rear axle tag is there.. no paint code tag on firewall.. no tag on tranny a 285v my best opinion ...

I need the AXLE code that is stamped on the 2nd line-far right of the Warranty Plate to determine correct parts.

The 3rd digit of the code, when decoded, lists the front axle weight capacity.

If you don't give me this code, I'm gonna tell the FBI you were in cahoots with Tanaka!

I hope Tanaka goes to prison.. he dishonored our department and from his crooked ways we will get federal oversight and a change of what was historically a pretty clean department... and the direct blame is upon him.

C9TZ-3281-A .. Tube-Spindle Connecting (less tie rod ends) / Obsolete

FEYER FORD in Edenton NC has 1 = 252-482-2144 / This is it, no one else has any.

I had a nice chat with Lloyd Parish.. the only parts man at the dealer...his southern accent was so thick I had to have him spell his name

He went up into their attic and found it... 167.00.. which since its the only game in town.. Ill pay it

I had the picture numbers for the tie rod ends and boots... did you have the ford numbers?
