Lack of Parking Brake Cable Adjuster

I have a '92 F-150 that I just replaced the rear parking brake cables on. When we tried to connect the rear cables to the 2-to-1 connector amidships we couldn't. There was way too much tension on the rear cables to connect it up. We checked out Chilton's and it said there should have been an adjuster. There wasn't. It was a single metal piece that had three slotted holes for the cables.

Thinking that this was an aberration we checked out three other F-150's of the same vintage and they had the identical setup.

How in the world are you supposed to connect this up? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Lack of Parking Brake Cable Adjuster

Well, I walked from my computer, looked underneath my 1990 F-150 saw the whole setup, came back and started typing in less than 30 sec. On my truck, the 2 to 1 bracket has a long threaded stud projecting thru the crossbar that the 2 individual wheel cables fasten to. The cable from the front of the vehicle terminates about 4" in front of this crossbar and is connected to the cross bar by a coupling that connects to a solid shank that appears to be a bent piece of 3/16" solid round steel wire. This bent steel wire is what is fastened to the threaded stud that is the adjuster. It could be that these components were eliminated in favor of closer tolerance cabling in 1992. You could try a junkyard and get the 1990 adjuster assembly. If the issue is just getting the cables on, try doing with the brake drums off first and if that doesn't work, take off the brake shoes from the backing plate.

Thanks. If nothing else presented itself I was thinking of that as a possiblity. I was also thinking of getting a short length of cable and using some cable clamps to make a homemade tensioner.

I appreciate the answer.

Back off the rear brake shoe adjustment until you have enough slack to connect the rear cables to the one coming from the parking brake pedal . Once the cables are connected readjust the rear brake shoes .
