Has anyone rebuilt the Lower Manual Shaft Joint
My 1974 F250 has manual steering and the lower steering shaft boot is ripped. I do not know if either ends of the joints are worn out or need replacing since it was given to me off the truck. When I try to wiggle both ends it feels snug.
I see a lower manual shaft rebuild kit. I never done this type of repair and wonder if anyone on this site has done it and can explain what they did.
It looks simple but simple enough to make a mistake and i don't want to loose my steering going down the road.

Here's the parts catalog pic of the whole enchilada, all of these parts are obsolete, but can be found NOS except the boot, as it was only available with the complete assembly.
The 3815 u-joint is the same as 1966 F100 4WD - 1967/75 F100/250 4WD - 1961/86 C Series Tilt Cabs & 1970/89 Louisville's (L/LN/LNT/LTS600/900).

I took the shaft over to a Machinist friend who said that the upper u-joint needed to be replaced as well, even though I thought is was OK. He said you would feel the slightest play when bolted together. He said that he just replaced on of that size for a Kawasaki Mule. The U-Joint cost $70.
It would cost me $50 in labor and both joints (parts) would cost $120. I decided to go with the Borgensen telescopic shaft for $235 from Summit Racing. I hated to spend that much more money on this truck but with the new technology and ease of installation I thought a few more dollars would be money well spent.
After much thought
