351 vs 460 fuel and pull ?

HP and torque specs for both over a number of years.

As for fuel, identically equipped, with the same transmissions and axles, I would expect the 460 to use slightly more fuel. However, the extra fuel buys extra power and an easier tow.
If you have a specific vehicle in mind, you may get folks with the same vehicles to give real examples.
You might find that a 351 stuck in a lower gear would give worse fuel economy than the easier running 460 in some vehicles.

The 460 will out pull the 351 all else being equal but so it should be, in this case there is no replacement for displacement. The 460 will get 10-12mpg at best no matter the trans/axle combo or how nice you drive it, while the 351 can do mid to high teens just driving around. What do you want more.

So essentially a 351 is fine for a standard F250 pulling 5000 pounds and will be a better economical package for doing that over a 460 mount ?

Occasional towing 351W...........lots of towing, less "grocery getting" 460.

460s are brutes for towing, but the one thing they cannot pass is a gas station, expect 8-10 mpg towing a heavy load, 10-12.5 mpg unloaded depending on gearing and driving habits.

The old IDI is better compared to a stock 351 because that is the gas motor it resembles most in terms of HP and TQ output. The only redeaming feature of these old diesels is that they get great gas milage towing or empty but you better not be in a hurry. Until you get into a turbo diesel the best towing motor Ford made was the 460.

I have a turbo IDI F 350 and I now realize the old school updated Cummins or IDI Navistar are truly the best thing going for what I want. The newer electronic stuff is good but pricey and you cannot run waste oil through them as easily.
Conanski I am looking for a old school 1 ton or 3/4 ton keeper and do not mind building one but need to start with a low mileage chasses. What would you look for.
I do not care what brand either, a guy here in town took a F350 and put a Cummins mechanical injector pump motor in it run on waste oil with 5 speed and he claims it is by far his best build.
Happy Easter and thanks for the help, I was stupid and just missed a F250 with low miles and that was dumb!!!!! decided to wait till morning and it was gone in 3 hours.

they were really trashing the 460 for towing on the IDI forum and said it will not pass up a gas pump and anybody who tells you they will pull loaded and get over 8 miles a gallon is basically a liar. Is this true ?
But there is not a non turbo IDI alive that my 460 wont show tail lights to whether its empty or 10k lb on behind.
