87 E350 under load dies new carb,
Hello all I have a 1987 E350 with a 351W Automatic transmission and a manul fuel pump. I just replaced the holey 4180 with a rebuilt 4180 from Guaranteed Carburetors the carrb is supposed to be a bolt in and go. well here is the issue.
runs fine with no load can rev and all that stuff. when its under load it will die after about 30 to 45 sec. If i drive it i can only get about 100 yards before it dies. I seams like it might be flooding under load but Like i said it runs fine with no load. I ran it for a half hour without load. and its fine any help would be helpfull. all vacuum lines were reconnected the two on the spacer plate and all the air cleaner ones were reconnected. FYI the Old carb was leaking badly from all the gaskets.
Please help im desperate.
Thanks
Mike

how would I check the fuel pressure with a manual fuel pump there is no electric fuel pump in the tanks or in line. I cleaned the fuel tank and replace all the fuel lines. new pickup filter in the tank new canister filter and new filter at the carb inlet. could this be just a float issue. If i check the fuel pressure what should it be. there is one more symptom it will not start for a min or two after it dies. FUEL Pump is new as well.

If you can check the fuel pressure right before the carb I would just to be sure (look for a minimum of 4-5psi), but I doubt that is your problem since the mechanical pump would have to fail catasrophically and you'd see evidence of it in the oil or the outside the vehicle. It sounds to me like your problem is in the new carb itself. Just because it was rebuilt doesn't mean it was rebuilt properly, it sounds like the fuel bowls are emptying before the pump can refill them. That could be a number of things in the carb, but it sounds to me like the float levels were not set right, they lift the needle valve off the fuel inlet for the bowls to refill them.
Hope that helps
