Timing Help Please

Ok so I made a mistake while redoing the top half of my 460. While I was cleaning the pistons and cylinders, while the heads were being surfaced and cleaned up, I rotated the crank to move them and clean thoroughly. Well that's not an issue normally except I didn't have the timing chain on it.

Now, everything I've read, and a buddy of mine and I talked about and understand, says that piston #1 at TDC, and then the valves should be in a neutral position. Springs kind of tight but loose enough to move them. That's where we got #1 valves at, and then the timing set was set up on the bench, crank key hole pointing up, and then the cam gear pin hole pointing down. Lubed it up with some assembly lube, and it slide right on.

I think it all looks right, but I have some concern as to if it is or not.

Can someone give me some insight? I don't want to get it all back together, still a few days off from doing that, waiting on parts, and then start it to find out it's wrong and I have to take it all back apart again.

Thanks in advance. I can take pics tonight when I get home if anyone wants to see what the valve positions are.

With both valves closed (insert lifter for ease) and #1 piston at tdc you're ready to stab the dizzy in with the rotor @#1 plug wire.

as for cam, line marks like you did. You can rotate the engine 720 degrees and watch it all work if ya want to confirm it according to firing order.

I think I understand what you're saying. Thank you. I'll get it in tonight after work and see if it all works like that.

Actually what do you mean by insert lifter for ease? Everything is in, rockers, springs, valves, rods, etc. Right now where it's sitting, #1 valves, I can move the valves a touch, like I can feel them pop, whereas the others next to it are too tight to move.

I thought you currently had the heads off, my mistake. You're just looking at the rockers which is good.

you should be able to move the pushrods with one fingertip of a closed valve. One that is even remotely pressured by the cam won't move with a fingertip, or at least won't move easy, you can beast it with a finger but not finesse it like a closed valve.
