Ok with all the chatter about the 6.0 Vs the 6.4 starters
I got one of each for you to look at and see if you can
tell the 6.0 from the 6.4

I can tell you this that one of the two in the image is going to need some repair
it seems to be not spinning like it should. But that has no effect on the identifaction game.

I will guess the starter labeled #1 is for the 6.0. They both look exactly the same except for the output shafts.

#1 is 6.0.

#2 is 6.4?

#1 has an extra "thingy" (excuse my lack of technobabble)

Could be way off base

Hint. They used both style of starter bendix units on each one
at some point. Or at least that is what I have found in the photos.

#1 is universally the 6.4, #2 drive end is 6.0.

Shouldn't find the #2 drive end on any factory 6.4 starters.

As for reman, it's all out the widow

Since I have never seen a 6.4 starter before I couldn't play LOL
My question would be is either of those a permanent magnet type starter?
The reason I ask is the armature houseing on 2 looks smaller dia. than 1.

It looks like the bolt plate is thicker on starter #1 6.4 than the #2 6.0 . Now looking at the drive gear on them how would the 6.4 starter work on the 6.0?

#1 is the 6.4 starter due to the different output shaft.

That extra thingy is the solenoid terminal.Someone had taken that one
apart at one point before I got it. They reinstalled it 180º out of place.

Anyway I did get a 6.4 in today. Hmm, I likey I think, Different sound
like it faster. Have to check the RPM on it at start.

Ah,

I'll add that to the memory banks.

Cheers,

Starts just a tad bit faster. Well more than a tad.
Truck was already warmed up.

Any adverse effects from using a 6.4 starter in a 6.0?

Superdutyservice has been installing these, don't think he has mentioned any problems yet. Send him a PM
