Loud creaking when turning? Transmission crossmember?!

Hey, guys. I just read a post here where:

"3) I have the creaking transmission crossmember which you'll also see on this site"

was mentioned. I couldn't find the originating post, but I need to know something...

My 96 F-150 I6 Mazda 5-sp always (almost always) has a loud creak whenever I turn left or right. The turns don't need to be sharp at all...the creak is almost always there. I thought at first it was my toolbox in the back, but I removed it and it's still there.

I have been hypothesizing this since I bought the truck: loose rear shock sliding around, bed liner sliding around, etc etc etc.....but this "transmission crossmember" is really getting to me...

Has anyone else experienced this loud, annoying creaking when turning? Sound seems to be coming from the rear...

Hey, thanks!
-Nick.

The creeking could also be coming from loose front crossmember to frame mounting rivets. I found one on my F150 under the spring/shock mounting bracket near the steering box. It caused an annoying creek when steering at slow speeds. They can be replaced with grade 8 bolts and nuts. Have someone turn the wheel while you observe. Listen for noise and look for movement. Be sure and block the wheels!

There's a TSB on the frame creaking. If you're still having problems with it let me know and I'll send it to you.

Nick, I have a 94 F150 that used to have the same creak. Drove me up the wall. I eliminated the noise by removing all of the crossmember bolts, and replacing them with new grade 8 ones coated with a little lock tite. Real easy fix. Hope it works for you.

I'd like to but it's pretty long, 20 pages. I'm working on a web site and will post it there when I'm done. I can email it out though.

*&$#,I think I have a similiar problem. Under slow speeds and turns I get a creeking/popping. What exactly do I have to replace to stop this? I have had cars make noise before but if everyone else has this problem then I'm sure I do to. Which bolts do I replace?

Please email me the TSB @ guest00@attglobal.net

Thanks!

I wish I knew exactly. I emailed one guy that had this problem and PM'd another (both in this post) and neither have gotten back to me in over three days.

This weekend, if the warmth and sunniness do not subside, I will get under the truck and take a peek.

From what I've gathered is that there are huge rivets that must be drilled out and replaced with large nuts and bolts. Problems have been found on the tranmission mount crossmember and on frame crossmembers...dunno EXACTLY where, though

I wouldn't mind a copy of the TSB as well... I have a similar problem with my 1996 F150 I6.
