The law or regularion for determining how the tires and axles are rated was changed back in '08 I think it was. That is the law that I went against Forest River on and got my axles changed from 6k to 7k. They all knew the laws and still went with old practices. You can no longer subtract the pin weight for determining the axle rating. It's been a long shift and just got home. I'll try to look up the law and post a link later after some down time.

Here is one of the sites from NHTSA. Basically it was requiring the tires to hold the GVWR without being hooked to the truck. I am like others here, I love a safety margin when dealing with tires and the loads put on them. The site I am looking for is one of the "FMVSS 571.120.para S10" It's entirety is out there but can't find it for some reason.

I've never come very close to loading my 20k dual tandem gooseneck go its limit--maybe within 3k at most. Even so I guess that's the advantage of dual wheel axles: even with the lowly XPS Ribs it's still well over 1500 lbs greater worth of tire than theoretical trailer ratings. My 5er is a short and light 24 footer without the need for too much in the way of tires, which is how I prefer it

Yep, we're home. Trip went great. Truck towed like a champ and got about 9.5 MPG doing around 70-73 MPH all the way. Not bad with a 16k anchor behind it. Stayed at Cabela's overnight in Hamburg PA. Most know that Walmart allows overnight RV parking but Cabela's takes that to the next level with RV specific parking area, a dump station, and potable water. Even got a pizza delivered while we were parked there...
Spring was waiting for us when we got home. Supposed to be 65 today so I think I'm going to attack the 5th Airborne install.

You're going to love the 5th Airborne. Huge difference for us - really smooths things out, especially over the crappy VT roads.
Sounds like you had a great trip home. 9.5 is excellent at those speeds. That's one reason I tend to be conservative - I can get 12 loaded at 60 but it sure drops off fast over that.
Have a Good Friday kinda day Rodney.

Thanks Shawn. Oh, and on the Cabela's thing, you can go to their website and each store has it's own page. On the store specific page you can see what they have to offer. I think most if not all have RV parking and it will be listed. Not all have a dump station and water but if they do, that will be listed too...

different pivot points and shock locations.. I have the trailair triglide.
provides insulation from harsh up and down movement. where the triglide does front/back, side/side
what I don't understand is if he has the TrailAir.. why remove it to install a 5th Airborne? but to each their own.

Sam has it about right. The 5th Airborne has an air adjustable shock in it that insulates the pin and the hitch from one another by absorbing the shocks that would otherwise be transmitted directly to the truck from the trailer (and vice versa). Smooths everything out. Lots of brands, just happens that Rodney and I have the 5th Airborne. They all do basically the same thing.
