1987 F250 2WD->4WD Conversion
Hey Fellas,
Ive been toying with the idea of converting my current project truck to 4wd.
Here is a little background:
1987 Ford F250
300I6
T-18 4 speed
2WD
Today while out at the JY and found a truck that looked like it may have some parts I might be able to use.
1987 Ford F250 (Manufactured by Canada Ford)
302 V8
T-18 4 speed (99% sure.. Borg Warner 0427 13-01-065-907 was cast in the side)
TC couldn't tell by looking, hoping someone can help me out Tag ID said
B1073 1345-30
124658 E7TA-T
I have done some looking but haven't gotten a positive ID yet on the TC.
I was wondering if anyone had an idea whether or not I could mate this TC to my current tranny or if I would have to take the TC/tranny as a combo. Im assuming that my 2WD T-18 has a different output spline count than the one of the 4WD T-18 but I'm not 100%
If anyone has any insight please let me know!

I'm not 100% sure about your case, but in every instance that I know of 2WD and 4WD transmissions are not interchangeable. 2WD trannies have a tailshaft housing that supports the 2WD tailshaft with it's yoke for the driveshaft U-joint while 4WD trannies don't have a tailshaft housing since the t.case bolts there and supports the 4WD tailshaft. Best case is usually that you would need to completely disassemble the 2WD trans, install a 4WD tailshaft and reassemble it before bolting the t.case up. Worst case is you simply can't. So if you can get a 4WD trans you're probably a lot better off.

Grab the donor transmission. A simple tailshaft swap will not net you a 4wd compatible trans. Great info on the previous reply.

I looked into doing this with a trans I wanted to put in a bronco I had.
The 2wd output shaft is actually shorter than the 4x4 output shaft. The 4x4 has go into the transfer case on the other side of the case adapter. The 4x4 shaft is something like $250-300 if you can find it and then all the seals etc. on top of that. It isn't worth the cost. Just find a 4x4 version.
Sell your current 2wd transmission to an Early Bronco guy (easily adapted to a Dana 20 case (not near strong enough for a fullsize)) and put the money towards your 4x4 trans.
