Well, I have spent the last couple of days studying the weather patterns, average temperature, average precipitation, forecast, average sunlight and various other weather considerations. I pulled out my old thermodynamics books and wrote a computer algorithm to calculate the most likely date of snow melt.

I need one more thing to complete my calculations. Tom, can you run out and take a core sample and send me a picture? I figured I would be lazy and just calculate an average snow density. I thought about adding a variable density loop to the algorithm, but was hoping to just use the average to make it easier. Now if the core sample varies wildly, I might have to adjust the calculations.

I had to call in sick from work to finish this up, but the prize is well worth it.

I think a core sample today would include some snow left over from last year, some shredded auger belt from the snowblower, and the tears I cried knowing if I sold my house and moved south it would only buy one week of high living at a posh beach resort in St. Thomas.

I'm going to have to be smug. Although I live north of the 45th parallel, ol' man winter never came to the great Pacific Northwest this year. It never snowed here, I've already had to mow my lawn twice, 72 today and the tulips are almost done. Sorry.

Last chance to get your guesses in! There are still some likely days and AM/PM choices that haven't been picked yet.

I was thinking the same thing, glad you said it first.

OK, back to our regular scheduled programming folks.
For those of you wishing to get in on the bet before end of day tomorrow send me your guesses (with AM or PM) via personal message.

Had some light snow here on Saturday and again today if that gives an idea of how much winter wishes to stick around.

We had snow Saturday morning. It was just a light coating but enough to cause accidents on Interstate 80 so that the West bound lanes were shut down.

Guys, I ran through snow flurries all the way from Brownsville TN to Forrest City AR Saturday. Told my wife someone needs to B@^$%hslap Mother Nature and wake her up to the fact that it is spring.
On another note, I know you guys are eager to have all of your snow gone, but all of the run-off from it is flooding us out here in south Arkansas.

Contest update April 8th

Well the first full week of April has passed and there is still plenty of snow on the ground. The apple tree is more visible now though. (see picture taken one hour ago)

You guys that guessed dates up through today - I admire your optimism, but mother nature simply isn't changing the season here yet.
We are forecasted to get a light coating of fresh snow tonight.

A lot of you are still in the running with some good guesses later in the month and beyond. I'll give another update next week.

My snow pile here in CT is about to go after a lot of melting this week. Looks like the moles had a good time running around underneath it all winter.

Updated on April 16th

We've made some progress. Much warmer weather in the last six days.
The snow is slowly losing the battle. The apple tree is now fully visible again. (see picture) Snow is about 15" deep.

It's going to be interesting who wins this. After April 18th you guys all picked unique days so there won't be a tie.
I'll give another update next week.
Tom
