Tilt Column Gear Shift Lever

Hi guys,

I have a 66 F100 and normally post in that part of the forums, but I have been rebuilding the 1978-79 tilt column that was present in my truck. The tilt u-joint was very loose and causing a lot of play in the steering and the bearings were shot. I have fixed that and am cleaning the column up and painting it before putting it back in.

But here is my issue. I want to convert the truck back to a column shift, currently a floor shift, but the PO put the column in without the gear shift lever. Does anyone know either (1) where I might be able to find the shift lever or (2) whether the levers are interchangeable with others from ford or GM.

I have been scrounging eBay but cannot find one, although I see many from other Fords and I see some GM ones.

It seems I can source every other part but that one. The turn signal lever can be had from a variety of places but no one has the gear shift lever.

Thanks for any help!

I have a '78 tilt column I rebuilt and installed in my '69 F100 short bed Ranger.

The tip of the shifter (inside the shift collar) on my '78 shift lever isn't the same as the tip of the stock shift lever that was in my '69 fixed column.

Turn signal wires were just temporarily pulled up out of the way in this photo.

I didn't cut/splice any of my truck's original '69 dash wiring harness to install my '78 tilt column. I made a short 'patch cable' to plug in, in between the column connector and the original dash harness connectors.

Ultraranger, do you have install notes on how those cruise buttons work with your column?

OK, after searching the master parts catalog, I can not find a specific part number. But, I do not see any specifications for a different part for tilt wheel. This leads me to believe that any A/T column shift lever will work, but I would try to stick to around a 78/79.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Currently, the CC switches/mounting bracket are just steering wheel ornaments (aren't wired to anything).

Years ago, I bought a totaled out 5.0L '90 Mustang GT to get the fuel injected 5.0L engine, engine harness, ECM, T-5 manual 5 spd transmission, ect. from it. I also got the cruise control servo and control module from the donor GT.

Presently, my '69 F100 Ranger has its stock 240 inline six and a C-4 automatic. Future plans are to replace them with the fuel injected 5.0L engine and a 4R70W (electronically shifted) 4-spd automatic overdrive transmission from a '98 3.8L Mustang.

The steering wheel and hub adapter are from MOMO. The CC switch bracket is from an '89 Saleen Mustang. The CC switches are from an '87-'89 Mustang.

When I swap to the fuel injected engine, I'll install the CC servo and control module and wire it to the switches. If you do an Internet search for an '87-'89 Mustang's CC wiring diagram, you should find the circuit wiring for the switches.

Thanks 4x4slik.

When you say stay with a 78/79 do you mean a truck/Bronco or any 78/79 Ford? The problem is I cannot seem to find one for a truck/Bronco anywhere, which is I am wondering about interchangeability.

Or Van, but it can be from a non tilt column. Maybe a 77, 76, but early 70's fords would be a big gamble, even in a dent. NumberDummy could tell you exactly what would fit, but he is taking some time away the forums to get some life taken care of. Might try PMing him, but he did have it turned off. Mikeo0o00o is another that is better at this than most. They can even tell you if anyone has NOS.

Might change the title or start a thread asking for a part number.
