ZF 5speed noise

Just bought my truck. they said the clutch was a few years old but the throwout bearing makes noise when you let clutch out in neutral and 1-3 make a weird noise when going slow. is this normal for these transmissions. other then the noise things seem to work good.

you don't say anything at all about the particulars of your truck. If you have a single mass flywheel/clutch type, then this might be completely normal noises (gear roll-over noises).........

its a 91 f250 4x4 extended cab long bed. I bet i have a solid flywheel when i bought it he said the clutch was replaced a few years ago. Also it has been in his family a long time and he said it has done it as long as he can remember. i think he was about 24 it was his dads truck and his uncle bought it brand new so i bet its had some clutch jobs before. is there a way to check without taking it apart to see if it has a DMF or a solid flywheel?

If you drop the inspection plate thats at the bottom front of the transmission you can inspect the flywheel. Unfortunately I don't have a picture handy to show you the difference, but if you post a picture here we can tell you what you have.

Hey i tried to take the inpection cover off but wasnt able to get it off. I think there was some crud on the back of the oil pan that wouldnt let it drop. I did get a peek in there and looks like a solid flywheel. Also have a small transmission leak because there was some atf on the outside of the pressure plate do you guys think if i ran some high mileage atf that it could go away.

There are a couple screws/bolts for the inspection cover that are on the front of the transmission that are hard to get to. There might be a bit that gets stuck behind the starter as well. It does tend to be a pain in the butt to get it off and put it on.

No idea on the high mileage atf, but if there is enough on the pressure plate after its been spinning around with the engine running I'd take a closer look to see where its coming from.

Well this sucks. I checked the fluid on the zf and it was low i put what i had around the house in drove it last night then parked it and when out and there was a puddle of atf where its parked. So looking like im going to have to pull it. went to a transmission shop out here and asked there MT guy and he said to install seal would be 125-150 and about 400 if it needs any bearings. Good thing this thing shifts good im guessing the guy i bought it from never checked the fluid

Well that is a bummer, but really if the seal is leaking thats what you gotta do.

Did you find the source of the leak? Have you inspected the case for cracks?

Well got the inspection cover of today to take a closer peek. Didnt see the 4th bolt the other day so got that off looked for cracks up in there didnt see any there is a fresh droplet right on the clutch fork below the input shaft so it has to be the seal. On a brighter note since i did put more fluid in it the other day the noise seems to have mostly gone away even though i didnt even get it to full capacity. Talking to the transmission guy he said if i wasnt getting weird noises at and speed but low speeds he seems to think my bearings will be okay and he will just need to install a seal. Also think my clutch will be okay will clean everything once i get it apart, also im sure i have a DMF now.

thanks everybody for the help. Got it back on the road friday night. Thought i would let everybody know my transmission guy told me that someone rebuilt this recently but they used the wrong seal for the front seal. maybe they just used what came with there rebuild kit but if any of you try this yourself make sure you get the right seal in there. If i had it rebuilt i might even go so far as to check for leaks before i put it back in.
