It was more like a "slipping" shift then a true downshift.

Yes, those are the signs of a failing MLPS. I recommend changing it now before it destroys your transmission.

What about just "random" hard shifts? Would that cause it or just heat?

It could be the MLPS. It could be many other things, too. If the new MLPS fixes it then we don't have to chase down all the other possibilities.
