Question Rear Main Seal, Viton Vs Teflon?

I'm going to replace the rear main and oil cooler seals in the 6.9 that's going into the '86. Figure while it's on the stand is the best time to do it.

Looks like there's two options for seal material, viton or teflon. Any feedback on which one would be better for the application?

Also looks like I'm going to need that crank sleeve for the seal too, there's a noticeable groove in the crank.

TIA!

My engine rebuilder said to just move the seal a little so that it's not riding in the groove; he has had poor luck with those sleeves.

So far, I've had no trouble doing that on my newly rebuilt engine.

92 was sleeved for the seal and leaks. I would move the seal as well. As for material... no idea.

I sleeved mine one of the times I dropped the transmission. It hadn't been leaking, but I figured with 200,000+ miles, it was close. There was a groove there, so I was happy I had ordered the sleeve with the seal.
I want to say the seal was teflon? But not really sure. It all came together as a kit, the seal, sleeve and sleeve installer, straight from Ford.

Yep, this one's not leaking yet either, just want to do it while the engine's out. There's definitely a grove in the crank.

I like the idea of moving the seal over, but that grove's dead center, I don't know if the seal can be moved over that much one way or the other. Guess I'll study it when the new parts arrive.

Thanks guys!

Just remember that the seal only goes in one way and you'll be fine <_<
