Boost/DPF Problems 2008 F-350
I just bought the truck with 65,000 miles on it. It still has the stock DPF ON IT. It had been a stolen recovery.
1. After driving it for a bit I noticed that almost seemed to make a engine rattling sound around 2000 RPM under VERY LIGHT acceleration. It didn't make the sound under HARD acceleration.
2. One time I left it idling for about a hour while loading cars. Once I started driving it then the turbo/waste gate was acting really weird and was running like crap. I know this truck doesn't have a blow off valve but sounded like it did. It would bearly make boost and then all of the sudden it would instantly jump up to 20 PSI (rpm would also jump up with increase boost, but I didn't notice how much). Once it was making boost and cruising at a steady speed it sound like it was constantly blowing out boost with boost/RPM fluctuations. I didn't notice if it was still making the engine rattling sound. The more I drove it then the better it got and after 25 mins city driving then it was back to normal with the exception engine rattling sound. I was pulling a 24' enclosed trailer with a mustang inside.
I don't know if there is anyway these problems are related or not? I do want to do a DPF delete, but don't need some fancy tuner that makes more hp then stock... just something that works.

Can you explain a bit more about what you mean by "blowing out boost"?
There is no waste gate as the turbo on your tuck has variable geometry and can drop boost under control by the ECM.
If you look around your turbo there are pipes leading to/from the intercooler in the front. The pipes connect to intercooler and turbo with rubber boots. I'd check the boots for splits and such. Then, there are metal pipes leading up from the exhaust headers up and behind the turbo (up pipes). They can break at the woven bellows. A third pipe leads down, from behind the turbo, to the 1st EGR cooler, mounted low on the driver side of the engine. It too has a woven elbow that can break. For breaks in the turbo up pipes you could look for signs like black deposits, indicating an exhaust leak.
Idling, wrong motor oil, running a cold engine ... never really getting the DPF cleaned ... can eventually lead to a badly clogged up DPF ... engine sounds like a rattle can and your LOM will tell you your getting horrible mileage. Time to run it hard on the highway, hauling something, or send the DPF out for cleaning.

Blowing out the boost- all I can really say is it sounded like my twin turbo race car when the blow off valve opens, but it just sounded like it stayed open (constantly blowing out boost). It got better within 25 mins of city driving with the trailer hooked up and now doesn't do it at all. I know it is a really weird problem. I'm just in the process of buying a EGR delete for it.
