Installing Flathead V8 with C4
Hi,
Brand new here so go easy on me! :-)
I have a 51 Ford PU with a flathead V8 and a C4 transmission. I had it rebuilt by a guy but I decided to take on the job of pulling the engine out and putting it back in. I am running into an issue when reinstalling the engine that I am hoping someone can offer some advice.
When I pulled it out I left the C4 mounted to the chassis and I am just reversing the process. Before swinging the engine back in I have reseated the torque converter in the C4 so I think I am good there. The issue is that when I bring the engine back together with the C4 I am having a hard time getting the torque converter studs to find the holes on the fly wheel. I have been trying to turn the engine over(manually by the fan) to get the studs / holes to line up but the moment I bring the flywheel up to the torque converter it seems to be applying enough friction that both spin when I try to turn over the engine over.
Does anyone have some trick to make this happen? Or is this just a brute force, trial and error process until you can mess them up?
I have thought about pulling the C4 right out, mounting it to the engine and then swinging the whole thing in but that seems like a bunch of extra work and I don't know if I could swing/lower both pieces together into the truck. There doesn't seem like enough room to maneuver that one.
Tips? Tricks?
Thanks
Mark
