1982 Bronco What motor?!

Ok guys, my nephew picked up a rust bucket 1982 ford bronco. The vin says its a 255 V8 but the guy we bought it off of, said they had replaced the motor and he wasnt sure what size it is. Part of me wants to think hes full of it due to the milage. Runs great! Its time for new plugs/wires and some other typical tune up parts, so I really want to know WHAT the heck motor this really is. 6 valve cover bolts. I pulled some numbers off the intake, not sure if thats any help?

I have to pull the drive line out tomorrow as one of the u joints is SHOT, Its almost about to turn into a projectile.

Not sure they put 255s in Broncos, but

--6 bolts is the 289/302/351W series, "Windsor" series, of which the 255 is a member.

--the 255 used an open intake manifold with a valley cover under it, like the Y block. The other "w" motors use a cast manifold that is solid, no separation or daylight between the runners.

255--well, this isn't a 255 manifold, I can't find a picture of one. But this is an open style manifold, where the runners have no material between them:

The 255 is pretty hopeless, as 302 intakes won't fit due to the heads having different shaped ports.

Where did you/how did you decode the VIN? Engine codes are specific to a line of vehicles iirs, so a code for a LTDII or other car may not be the same as a Bronco. I would think it would be a 302.

I think your casting numbers start "C9..." which (wrong answer deleted, see post 3) "C9,," is 1969, which makes no sense for a 255.

C9 would be 69, not 79. 79 would be D9.

The 255 was available from 80-81 in the F-Series, but I've never heard of one in a bronco. Bigblock455, how is that you joined in 2006, but this is your first post? Welcome to FTE!

Here we go! That is a C

I did a search and that came us as a 1969 351

I found some other stuff about an H code? Supposedly used in 1969-1970 but i sure can not find something about an H code on the engine anywhere?

Heres some pictures that may help.

"H" code....where are you finding an "H" code? In the VIN of the '82 Bronco? Doesn't matter, as it appears you have a '69 351w 2bbl, a fairly modest engine in it's day but worlds better than a 255 and a substantial improvement over most '82 motors. It runs good you say? What else matters?

I was just reading about an H code and did not know what that meant or where i could find it.

Runs great, could use a rebuilt carb as its running a bit rich and the choke rarely works, but i already know a place to send that off to for a complete rebuild.

Someone put all the modern module crap distributor in it instead of the original, so thats a dislike in my book. Those things always went out back in the day. I doubt they improved on them since then LOL.
