V10 no question. perfect for your application.

I work for a truck upfitter, 95% of all the f-450/f-550s we upfit anymore are V10s. Includes many set-ups with PTOs and accessories.

We have a 2012 F-450 4x4 V10 with a 9' flat bed for a runner and its perfect. Gets around 6.9 mpg around town running around.

Thanks for the responses guys. Either engine will make enough power for the job. This is a business decision. I do want a diesel to play around with, so I keep my 7.3's for that.
If I'm not mistaken the V10 has to come with 4.88 gears, correct? Which apparently just gets 7 mpg empty. What could be expected pulling 25k lbs of trailer/hay?
How would mpg's compare with a diesel, which I think comes with 4.30 gears?
I think the V10 is going to be more economical regardless, but dang 7 mpg is not so cool. That's like an old 460.

the only option for gearing i've seen is 4.88, no problem running 80 MPH with our 2012 and they get the same MPG loaded or empty.

It's not much worse then 8 MPG i get with my V10 Excursion daily driving empty.

F-550 4x4 XL regular cab with 4:88 limited slip rear end with a flat bed is my dream farm truck. I do not think you could go wrong with that for what you are going to use it for. My company truck is a f-450 with the v-10 and I have been well pleased with it. At 21k lb gross I average 5 to 6 mpg, unloaded my truck weighs 13k and I get 7 mpg hwy. I have 87k miles on it with just oil changes. I do not think you could go wrong with a v10 for a farm truck.

We have 2 '08 6.4l F 550 and 1 F 450 utility bed trucks that only get 8 mpg.
V-10 all the way.

I've got to say, I'm a little surprised how one-way this is going. Do people with 6.7's check out this section of the forum?

25 years ago when diesels were idi, ran forever, required almost no maintenance, got 25 mpgs and diesel was 30 cents less per gallon than gas there wasn't much debate. With longer lasting gas engines, more power than older models, cheaper gas, less maintenance, cheaper to maintain, etc, gas engines the debate has swung back to the other side imo.

They do, but remember that a cab and chassis gets the detuned version of the 6.7 that has 300 hp, so the performance of it versus a v10 will be pretty close. If you were talking about the pickup version 6.7 with 440 hp the opinions in favor of the diesel would likely be stronger.

When I got my 06 f350 v10 I really wanted a diesel and still would like one but for farm use the v10 is really the best option, short trips and idling aren't kind to newer diesels. After owning the truck for five years and Towing a combined weight of over 35,000 pounds of hay 50 miles home with it I'm very impressed by the this engine. With 4.10's and 18" tires I can on a rare occasion get 14mpg HWY unloaded but generally average around 8/9mpg around the farm.

The engine is not detuned. The HP rating is different because the HP heavy duty vehicles are rated differently. It's the same engine with the same tune.

This is true with only the 6.2. They rate the hp at different rpms with the 6.2, not with the 6.7. With the 6.7 the cab and chassis models have a single turbo where the pickup models are twin turbo. The pickup 6.7 is rated at 440hp at 2800 rpm where the chassis model is 300 at 2800 rpm. The chassis model has 140 less hp than the pickup version. Not that 300 hp and 660 ft-lbs would be a slouch, but it is considerably less than the 440 and 880 of the pickup.

I suppose that's true. If we were talking pickups I'd be all for the 6.7. I do not like the 6.2 boss.

Check out the 6.7 section and see what we have to say there. The 6.7 is proving to be a great motor.

You could always buy you a f-450 pickup 6.7, sell the pickup bed and then put you a flat bed on it. Then you would have one mean towing machine.
