Its the part that the steering shaft goes into, the part that the two high pressure steering fluid lines go into (looks like giant brake lines), the part that moves the steering linkage (what is this called, tie rods??) , and the part that bolted to the drivers side of the engine bay (can't remember exactly where).

It is leaking terribly, I think. hard to see where its comin from.. my friend says its about a 1 inch diameter rubber looking hose coming from around the pump area, that the fluid is all around. hell its dark, i will try to look tomorrow.

can someone also tell me the entire make up of the steering system. what are the pieces called and their functions??

steering sector: I would try a bone yard for one that doesn't leak. It'd be cheaper. I've changed a few on vans, so I would asume it would be easier on a truck with more room. first remove the lines.remove the one bolt on the shaft to the steering wheel, then the 3 bolts that go through the frame into the sector. It is easier with someone helping you when bolting the new one on.

ok, it is leaking right at the bottom where the steering unit connects to the steering linkage/tie rods. The actual part that rotates to pull/push the wheels via linkage to turn. That is where it is leaking from, that seal. Could I buy a seal kit and rebuild it??

Its called a steering sector?? I never heard of that. I would call it the power steering unit, being its the main control of the steering.

The steering sector is not hard to change. Here is a tip, believe it or not, the steering sectors and pitman arms are EXACTLY the same from 1980 on. This includes Ranger to 1 ton models, 2wd to 4wd. I just put a steering sector from a 1988 Ranger onto my 1995 F-150. It's a bolt-on.
