Electronic 4x4 operation F350 2015
Need help understanding how the front axle works when you have electronic 4x4.
I understand the rear wheels will Lock when the switch on dash is turned but cant find info on what happens with the front axle.
What will front axle do in a case of the rear locked but say stuck in mud and no fwd progress being made. Will front pull you out?
Will front act as a old school limited slip?
Thanks in advance

When you turn the dial to 4wd or 4low a electric motor turns the tcase lever, then a vacuum pump sucks vacuum so it automatically engages the front hubs.
Now when in 4wd the truck sends 100% power equally front to back and whatever tire spins will spin. If you have the rear elocker option and you engage it both rear tires spin together no matter what until 20mph then it disengages and will reengage below 20mph again. The front will spin the tire with the less traction because it is a open carrier

you can also manually lock the front hubs in(with the dial on the hubs) if you plan on doing heavy 4wheeling/plowing or if the auto feature fails because of a vacuum leak.
I'm not sure if anyone offers a LS or locker for the front axle of the newer super duties. If it was me I'd go with a selectable locker in the front over a limited slip, that way you could drive in 2wd with the hubs locked in and not get any steering issues like you would with a limited slip in the front.

Spartan offers a drop in (lunchbox) style locker for the front D60 in our trucks. They run about $450 and take 2-3 hours to install. It'll definitely do it's part to get you out of the sloppy stuff.
