turbo, 6637, questions and other

Ok so my 97 f350 cc drw is having the tranny rebuilt over the next 4weeks...
While it is down I am installing
Gauges - glow shift maxtow - EGT, fuel pressure, trans temp, boost...
New glow plug relay
Fixing the core support

Replacing the headlights, turn signals, and marker light lenses
Already replaced the third brake light with an LED model
Replaced the broken stock air box with the 6637 kit from Riffraff
Now for the questions:

I noticed there was some kind of sensor in the stock air box, what dideveryone else do with that sensor once they installed the 6637?
As you can see by the attached picture the turbo compressor wheel looks shot...

How hard is a turbo rebuild?

I am thinking garret journal kit and compressor wheel from riffraff is about$300... Is the pulling and replacing of parts pretty simple? I have somemechanical talent... as I usually change my own fluids, obviously did shocksand 4" exhaust.... but have never opened a turbo up...

I did notice some diesel in the valley...haven't started searching for thatyet...wondering if it was spillage from when the dealer change the filterthough....as it looked fresh....

How many people leave off the steel cover over the fuel filter and glow plugrealy? It really seams as more of a hindrance than anything else...

<oYou can see my gallery collection of pictures here on photobucket...</o
<oLee Munger's (lee00) Library | Photobucket</o

<oStill uploading a few more as I type this...</o
<oadditional list of repairs that have been made...</o
<oAll ujoints rplaced & >carrier bearing replaced (to fix drive shaft vibration)</o
<oSteering, box, pump, tensioner pulley, pitman arm, and belt replaced... to fix steering slop (and frozen on pitman arm - broke 2 tools trying to get the original off).</o
<o4" exhaust added/replaced dryer vent pipe that was on it when purchased</o
<onew tire all around</o
<onew shocks all around</o
<ofresh oil change and fuel filter within 2 weeks of purchase</o
<ofixed loose mud flaps - also shortened slightly as a result of bad rubber at the top of the flaps.</o
<o</o
Does all this maintenance that I am doing, and was neglected by the previous owner, put me in line for two or more buckzooka's?

Turbo rebuild pretty straight forward, I have a thread on it, search bellows in the search thing and it's called my turbo and bellows build thread or something like that, I'm the op in the thread.... has pics an such. You probably won't be to impressed with the glow shift gauges, I had them for awhile, boost is inaccurate, can't say much for the Pyro or trans temp either, I ended up running them off my in site monitor and swapped out the pod gauges for Autometer gs's for the things the insite won't see, check my signature

Removing the turbo can be a PITA.

I was wondering about that with all the heat on the exhaust side....

Kinda thought it might be like removing and exhaust manifold from a gasser...

Hoping that with out a tranny in the way things will go easier...

I don't think having the transmission out would help any. Its doable, but not fun.

Start sorting those nuts on the collector with a penetrant. They are not fun to get off. Oh and find a nice cushy foamy to lay on the rad, your gonna want it

Turbos a breeze with the tranny out, I've gone back and forth with different folks with um saying out can leave the tranny in to get the turbo off but I dont, I've tried it and yea it's not gonna happen for me, I can have a tranny out, turbo off and apart on a bench in about 4 hrs... not saying that some bolts don't break along the way but on Avg that's about what I can do it in. I spent alot of time working on jack cooper car hauler road trucks so this stuff is easy to me..

The sensor is an ambient air temp sensor. You can ziptie it to one of the holes in the upper 1/4 pannel..
