92 5.0 in a 1965 Ford F100 (distributor gear)
I have a 1992 5.0 in my truck right now it is using a 1970s points distributor I'm assuming is a cast iron gear it works but I'm worried it's doing damage. The question is how hard is it to remove the distributor gear? Is it pressed on or is the pin the only thing holding it on? If it's working with the cast iron one is it worth changing still?

It is cause for concern, the steel cam gear will eat away at the softer cast iron and you won't know there is a problem until the distributor stops turning one day. Replacing the drive gear is fairly easy but you will need a puller.. the gear is a tight fit that won't just slide off after the pin is removed.

I have done it with a hammer and socket and believe it or not lining up the drift pin holes isn't that hard. A new gear probably won't have a hole drilled in it and I suggest you drill a hole through 1 side only, press the gear on to line up that hole with the one in the shaft, and then drill through both out the other side if the gear.
