1972 F-100 Build

Well i guess its about time to start my build thread. I've had the truck in my garage for a couple of months now and have slowly been working away at it. I recently changed jobs so im going to have a little more time to spend with the bump. Well i guess now is the time to start the story of where me and my 72 met.

This is how it sat the first day i went to look at it. I bought it from a friend i worked with at the time. It had been sitting in the elements for a couple of years which is where is got most of the rust from. It ran and drove when it was parked.

Oddly enough i went to look at the camaro on the other side of the bump. But being after i saw the 72 the rest was history. I pulled the vin from the truck and looked it up when i got home. It came with a 360 and a C6 auto trans. The truck was 100% complete which made me happy, so the only downer was the rust.

It took about 3 different trys to go and pickup the truck due to its location and a bad streak of weather didnt help at all

Just when we thought that it was dry enough boy did mother nature let us know. The tuck and trailer got stuck at the bottom of the hill.

Finally after calling for backup we got out of there and i got the truck home where it belongs.

It sat untouched for about a month or so until i had some time to start tearing it apart. here is my most recent progress.

Im working my way between the front clip and the interior. The bed im not too concerned about right now, seeing as how its most like going to be replaced. The floor pans seem to be rust free from the inspection that i have done this far. The problem areas in the cab so are are the drip rails and a little in the rocker panels. When i get back to working on the front clip, i will continue to remove all of the from sheet metal, core support and inner fenders so i can get ready to remove the tired 360 and trans.

Here is my current plan for the bump. Im going to do the CV front suspension swap and a axel over in the rear. Im also want to c-notch the frame to give me some extra from if i want to go lower or do air bags. As far as the power plant goes im leaning towards a beefy 460 or the mod motor route. I really like the idea of a new age mod motor like the coyote 5.0 for the reliability, but also love the old school aspect of a monster big block ford. Im also torn between a automatic trans or a manual. Well here is the start of my long build, i hope you guys enjoy and please feel free to chime in.

Welcome to the Bumpside. This is exactly what I want to do with my next truck.....I'm jealous. Are you going to paint it or leave the patina?

As much as I like the patina when it's done right, I don't think it's going to be a option with some of the body work I have to do. So I'm thinking it will get a fresh paint job just not sure on the color yet

I had a chance to get the headliner and vinyl flooring out last night. A lot lest rust than I thought there was. The floor pans can for sure be saved. The drip rail is still one of my main concerns.

The smart thing to do would be to throw in a Coyote. I know old is cool, but the new stuff goes unmatched and it comes out of the box with 400-something horsepower and it doesn't weigh the same as the horses it makes. I'm also not even sure how well a CV front end would handle the weight of a 460. I'm not certain, but if the Coyote's engine mounts are the same as the 4.6L then it would be a bolt in engine.

From what I have read the engine mount bolt patter for the coyote is the same as the 4.6. After the research I have done it seems that I may be leaning towards the coyote 5.0. It would be a pain in the butt, but so worth it in the end .

Then yeah that is 100% the way to go and the aftermarket is endless for them. If you're buying used though, take one out of a Mustang, not a truck. The trucks are detuned and don't have forged internals.

If all of the bugs are worked out of the setup then the reliability alone will be worth the retrofit.

Finally got some time to get back out to the garage today and get some work done.

First i got the rest of the interior out and cleaned it up a little. I found a few rust holes in the driver side floor board that dont look too terrible. The passenger side doesnt have any holes, but has quiet a bit of rust that will need to be removed.

After getting the interior squared away for now, i turned back to the front end of the truck. A couple of the fender clips were super rusted and wound up breaking while i was trying to get them out. while i was under the truck i noticed that the radiator core support is going to need replaced as well. So at this point im getting the front end apart the best way i can.

Im kinda at a stopping point for about a week now. My compressor took a crap and im looking for a good replacment. The one i want is a little out of my budget at the moment so im going to wait a little bit.

Looks like you had the same problem I had, a leaky windsheild seal.

doesn't surprise me considering the truck sat outside in the North Carolina weather for a few years.

How do the kick panels look at the bottom? I had to patch in a bunch there also.
