1978 f150 carburetor options

I have a 78 f150 4x4 automatic... It has the 400 motor with a 2 barrel carb. Motor is all stock with no modifications. it needs to pass smog here in California. It will be driven on street and on off road trips.. Which carburetor would you guys recommended? Do I just stick another factory carb on it or go with an after market carb?

Thanks again

Is there a carburetor installed right now? Don't get too far off the reservation if you have to pass smog test, it may run OK but otherwise fail emissions, I suspect.

I'd just rebuild the Motorcraft 2150 that's on it if it were me.

Yes there's a carb on it now...its pretty old. Truck has rebuilt motor but the carb was never really tuned good. People have tried rebuilding it in past and carb just doesn't run right. Yesterday was test driving it after coming out of storage all this fuel came out the carb i am guessing and cover the top of the intake with fuel.

It's a good carb, there are a couple places that work on an exchange basis if sending a rebuildable core. With 2100 series when the throttle shaft gets worn will start to leak air or vacuum.

So I was looking at some online and it looks like autozone has some remanufactured motorcraft 2150's but they have two different options. One with ball on center of throttle and one with ball on left of throttle? Not really sure what this means.

This link might help. Sounds like it's a great carb for off road use.

Stay with the stock carb. Rebuild it if you have to.

But if buying a reman, do not turn in your core until it passes with its replacement.

A few places that sell rebuilt carbs specific to the engine, year and emissions. Might want to call for specific carb.

Nice thanks for the info.. Looks like I need the one with the ball in the middle. I will be purchasing a new one and most likely will posting more questions.

Ok so I have my carburetor now and I have questions on installation. I am not really sure where the springs go since the old ones were just hanging there. If anyone has photos that be great. Also, what steps should I perform first when installing this carburetor?

Thanks

Here's a general checklist on basic carb setup:

http://www.junkyardgenius.com/holley/tune01.html

I'm quite certain if you plug in your carb number through internet search engine you'll find a manual or two, parts list, how to rebuild, on all kinds of websites and YT videos taken with archival quality Edgerton speed cameras at ultra-premium high-def w/ thermal imaging and the rest of it.

Does this gasket look right for the egr spacer plate? Bought it online and it says its for my truck but I am concerned that it may not be correct.
