Ok so I am pretty much finished welding these. I can grind them down, but I also don't think the welds look bad. They will look even better after blasting removes the final boogers..........

What do you think? Grind and finish? or leave them?

Keep in mind that no filler can be applied do the temps, and powder coating process.

 

As they say around where I live....them is to purdy to cover up.
They also say that about certain female body parts too.

OK, what is the application? Looks like it will work well as is. Shows lot of work. How many hours involved?

 

probabally 50+ hours and it is for a 300 six

 

If I could weld like that not only would I leave it as is, I would not put a hood on whatever vehicle it goes in so everyone who ever wanted to weld could see what could happen if you practice enough.

 

I'll have to be the deserter, I'd dress them up and make them smooth. I am also the type that doesn't like "patina" finishes.

 

I'd have to grind them smooth so it looks like one piece, especially for powdercoating. Powdercoating raw welds will make it look "crude" IMHO.

 

Nice work! That will look really sharp on the side of that 300. I would like to have that kind of talent. I would be more inclined to grind them especially if you want a nice paint finish.

 

I tend to agree, it just feels "unfinished".


The outer edges will not be an issue to dress and metal finish.


How about the fillets around the bungs and flanges? What is the best way to get them finished down?


I use a carbide bur, and a sanding drum. With this approach I still tend to "gouge" some places and leave rough marks. It is not typically an issue though because a good primer or a little filler will hide them. But in this case I cannot use it.


So, what's your recommendations on tooling?

 

You have put alot of work into that project and should be commended for it. IMHO I would do the additional time of finishing the welds. Make the curves look like they flow and the edges roll. 8pc Dual-Cut Carbide Burr Set - 1/4inch Shank

Go slowly with light pressure and you will have a nice looking finished pc ready for the finish

 

It is 16 ga. so i will not be able to really "roll" the edges. Just knock some of the peak off of them....
