2000 F250 7.3 4x4 Automatic. Reverse only.

New to big diesels, new to this forum. I just bought a 2000 F250 7.3L, 4x4 with an automatic transmission with 194,000 miles. It has an 8" lift on 37" tires, just in case that is relevant.

I have a hill behind my house, took a few people up late the other night. We ended up all having a 'good time' for about two hours, while we were inside the cab and just let the engine run for warmth.

We didn't do any rough or steep terrain, basically drove it up about a mile, parked it, and then tried to come home. When I went to turn around, I backed up while doing a 90 degree turn, then put it in drive to do the next 90 degree turn. Then nothing. No R, D, 2 or 1. After trying for longer than I like to admit, we gave up and all spent the night up there, thank goodness for the crew cab.

Got towed down the next morning, still nothing, forward or reverse. Before we got towed, I noticed all the tranny fluid was puddled under the tranny. When I got her home, I looked in the obvious places for a seal leak, but couldn't find anything. Could kind of see where it was coming from, but no seals in the area and no pressurized lines. I filled it back up with tranny fluid. No leaks, not a single drop. But she only has reverse.

With the wheels on the ground, P, N, D, 2 and 1 all feel the same, nothing. With the back wheels of the ground, D and 2 will spin the wheels, but you can tell it is slipping and not a solid engagement. When I put it in 1, the wheels will spin like its in reverse, but once again you can tell its not engaged fully. Reverse seems to work as it should when on the ground and in the air.

The simple answer is a tranny rebuild, but I'm hoping there are some simple and relatively cheap ideas I can try first. Sorry for the long post, I read the rules and they said to make sure to explain thhe problem fully, and I hope I have done that. Thank you in advance and I will check back many times a day throughout the life of this thread. I live south of Salt Lake City.
