2010 Capless Fuel Filler - gas smell

from another user here at FTE:
My 2010 Escape lately after filling up with gas has a odor of gas in garage after the fill up, but is gone by morning. I don't think any gas is spilled on fuel filler or outside of Escape. No warning lights or anything , could the seal on the spring loaded door be going bad! I never did like that system in the first place!
I have noticed the same thing lately on our early 2010. My wife is the daily driver of it, and she assures me that she hasn't been spilling gas out when filling. And I don't see any stain evidence of it, either.

After she parks it in the garage after a fill-up, it stinks up the garage for hours. After that, it doesn't smell. I was thinking that if a seal on the top of the gizmo wasn't sealing, why doesn't the gas smell continue day after day? I don't have an answer for that. I have the shop manual set, I'll have to see if they have anything on the capless filler.

Other than if there is a recall, I too will be the one to fix it, if anybody does.

I think there is that flag inside the spout that is the cause of this.

Is it dirty or not closing with a snap after fillup?

We have had that happen once on our 2012, there was some road crap keeping it from sealing properly. It took all of 10 seconds to fix. You can use the funnel in the rear storage panel to pop the latch, or if that is missing, the fat end of a 1/2" drive extension will pop it as well. A couple quick wipes and you are done. Also if your wife may not be spilling gas per se, but the trickle that is in all gas nozzles can be going into the drain, and if the drain is clogged, it will be there till it evaporates.
