2004 no heat...but first...

I have an '04 Explorer Limited and lately only blows cold air. I've read about the blend door motors but it's been too cold in MI to want to do much--so the truck sits.

When I was troubleshooting the problem I found that I'm not getting any vacuum signal to the heater valve in the coolant line. Before I contemplate removing the console & doing surgery on my dash I'd like to know for sure what position the valve should be in when heat is called for.

Oh yeah--all the other vacuum actuators seem to be working normally and there's no disconnected hoses under the dash; and no leaks.
Coolant reservoir is full.

I guessed wrong on the heater valve position. I ended up googling an answer. Out=heat.

I have seen a lot of those valve go bad. Normally trying to move it by hand with the truck running with the heat on will quickly point out what position it wants to be in for heat, as it will start to go there. I have in the past removed/plugged the vac line as a temp fix once the valve is open. I have even used zip ties to hold it open. Cold winter days make you do things you wouldn't normally. If you dont want to pony up for a replacement automatic valve, use a manual one. Its only purpose in life is to stop coolant flow to the heater core in the summer, so your A/C doesn't have to fight it.
